The first 2 Peter Ustinov Poirot films continue to rank at the top of my list. The 3 TV movies are fun, despite low budgets, being updated to the 1980s, and casting that makes it unfortunately TOO easy to figure out who the murderer is.
I saw APPOINTMENT WITH DEATH in a theater, thrilled to be seeing another feature film with Ustinov. Something was... "missing", however. Years later, a friend sent me a copy of it on tape, and I was shocked by HOW dissappointing I suddenly found it. It's actually gotten worse each time I've seen it. I've come to the conclusion that while it was a decent script, wonderful locations and a marvelous cast, that the directing & editing are unbearably inept and amatuerish.
This was a bit of a shock to me, not only as compared with the 2 previous feature films, but also with THE BIG SLEEP (1978), another of my all-time favorite films, which was ALSO directed by Michael Winner. I've read he has a long resume of "bad" films. Ah well. I guess he had one really GREAT film in him... and this wasn't it.
