I'd give this a 2. If you are Dutch yourself you'll see how badly acted this film is. The supporting actors are wooden and the story is a sad copy of "Jaws". The story is predictable as well. Really, almost every Dutch film critic calls this film a disaster, but people outside the Netherlands seem to enjoy it. If I'd get this on DVD for my birthday I'd burn it! Awful crap...

I grew up in Amsterdam, but dont you think this is one of the scariest movies of all time? I mean, it could happen, it is not as unrealistic as movies as Hellraiser(thats crap).
When you speak Dutch this is a really good movie, a lot of jokes involved and Amsterdam accent that you wont get from the subtitles.
This is one of the scariest movies Ive ever seen. Only some sick Japanese movies (like audition) maybe compete. And the French movie "Irreversible" is sick as well, but it is another genre.

But of course it is not worth to learn Dutch, because it is to small.
I think you can only rate this movie properly when you HEAR what they say.

Answer me, I want to convince you!

You clearly haven't understood this film at all! This film is not a jaws remake. The only connection is water! Jaws is just a cheap Holywood ripoff compared to Amsterdammed, especially if you consider the fact that Jaws has something like 6 sequals which ruins the origonal idea!! Don't get me wrong, I liked the movie, not bad for the 70s. We've all discovery channel and we know that its just *beep* that sharks attack regularly like that:

The yearly average of unprovoked shark attacks on humans is 75, resulting in about 10 deaths. These worldwide numbers are small given the millions of humans that enter the water. You have a better chance of dying from a bee sting, a dog or snake bite, or lightning than from a shark attack.
The International Shark Attack File (ISAF) investigated 100 alleged incidents of shark-human interaction occurring worldwide in 2003. Upon review, 55 of these incidents represented confirmed cases of unprovoked shark attack on humans.

(((((((((((("Unprovoked attacks" are defined as incidents where an attack on a live human by a shark occurs in its natural habitat without human provocation of the shark. Incidents involving sharks and divers in public aquaria or research holding-pens, shark-inflicted scavenge damage to already dead humans (most often drowning victims), attacks on boats, and provoked incidents occurring in or out of the water are not considered unprovoked attacks. "Provoked attacks" usually occur when a human initiates physical contact with a shark, e.g. a diver bit after grabbing a shark or a fisher bit while removing a shark from a net. The 45 incidents not accorded unprovoked status in 2003 included 18 provoked attacks, nine cases of sharks biting marine vessels, four incidents dismissed as non-attacks, one scavenge, one air/sea disaster, and 12 in which insufficient information was available to determine if shark attack was involved.)))))))))))))

YOU DON'T HAVE TO READ THAT, JUST PROVING THE POINT THAT SHARK ATTACKS ARE VERY UNLIKELY!!!!!

A serial killer is much more likely to kill you!!!! Besides, the scene where that whore was tied by her feet hanging on a rope from a bridge, with that tourist boat passing by, is so much more brutal and shocking... than anything in Jaws!!!!! Furthermore, if you've ever been in Amsterdam at night walking home, after an evening of drinking you know its completely deserted. In daytime there are hundreds of people, this most certainly gives Dutch a different attitude to the movie.

The idea that in one of the thousands of canals in Holland, a serial killer is on the lose, is a fear that only Dutch people can understand. I hope you understan arguments thatv a 2 is simply unacceptable!!!!

I GIVE IT A 9.0
ONLY THE gODFATER AND A SELECT FEW MOVIES ARE BETTER!!!!!!

I'm Dutch myself, and I loved this movie. Dick Maas did a great job (also with Flodder and De Lift), especially if you consider the limited budget. These days it's a different story; it's much easier to do action here now. Just look at Vet Hard.

I agree that some acting was atrocious. Tatum Dagelet was just so friggin' annoying, it sure helped in making you want to hate her character (which you were supposed to, I think). Edwin Bakker was slightly better. Most other side roles were good for what they were- side roles. And Serge-Henri Valcke is one of my favourite actors in this movie. He is just so funny! There is this little thing in a restaurant scene, where he accidentally squirts tomato sauce over his hand (or something like that). The boat chase was fun and I was reminded to it when I recently saw Live and Let Die.

Of course the whole mutated-killer thing was a bit cheesy and B-grade (and impossible), but it was fun to see something like this in a movie from my own soil. The make-up was not bad, but I didn't like it when they killed the guy off right after his face was revealed. I also felt sorry for him when he decided to kill himself.

But, as much as I like Amsterdamned, I think I wouldn't be as nearly interested in it if it were American. Then, it would just be some run-of-the-mill Hollywood springtime flick.

I'm surprised that the Dutch critics for this movie were so bad.

I agree totally. I remember so well when this movie came out, I thought it had so much going for it. I grew up in Belgium but live now in Australia and I'd love to get my hands on the DVD.
I also think back of movies like "De Lift" which was good back then, but doesn't seem to have that same magic anymore.
Amsterdamnned still will/does, I'm sure.
Also, I love the Lois Lane theme song "Amsterdamned" ...
9/10 here too....

Yes... and psycho killer monster mutations happen all the time... you just harpooned yourself in the foot.

To even compare it to Jaws is a travesty, though. Jaws was well made and stands the test of time. Amsterdamned was a fast, cheap action/thriller with God-awful acting and a rediculous plotline. I guess only Netherlanders (Dutch?) would get this movie... which makes me sad for their countrymen.

It's a shame this film is so underrated. Dick Maas is one of the few Dutch directors that had the guts to do something original for a change. We've had so many dark/dramatic films in the past that it's nice to see something different. Though the plot might not be as good as such Dutch classics as "De Aanslag", "Turks Fruit" or "De Vierde Man" this film still entertains and stands as an example for many upcoming Directors in Holland.

It was on ARD (german state television) yesterday. Synchronized in German. Then it really turns into a doubtfull movie... ;)))

I red someone here gave it a 9 and only the Godfather was a better movie. I respect everybody's opinion but Amsterdamnded compared to The Godfather....come on, get real.

And for everybody who says it's a bad movie. You had to see it in theaters when it came out in 1988. I was there, it was a very good and thrilling movie. One of the first dutch movie's in "hollywood" style. I saw Running Man Yesterday (1987) and When I saw that as a kid I thought it was one of the best movie's ever. Yesterday it really looked bad. What I want to say is, you must put a movie in the right aspect. Dont judge a 20 year old movie on today's standards.

Still everybody has a right to have their own opinion. I am just giving mine ;)

I am from Ireland and I enjoyed this film.I thought it was an original idea with the bad guy using scuba gear in the canals. Not bad at all , I have seen much worse films.

I've seen this movie a couple of times and objectively speaking it's not a very good movie. The dialogues are pretty cheesy, the story is too and the acting is acceptable at best. I like watching it though, partly because the bad acting and story is just hilarious, partly because I know Amsterdam pretty well and I enjoy watching old footage of the city. But that's not all there is to it: I like the raw, nasty atmosphere of this movie. The grim back alleys, the dump the killer is living in and the nasty synthesized music all add up to an atmosphere that makes my skin crawl (and that's good :D). So, objectively speaking, I'd rate this movie a 4 or a 5, but personally, I do enjoy it everytime I watch it, so I rate it a 7.

Who else thought the canal chase scene was fantastic?

It's difficult to please me with any action scenes at all. But I really enjoyed the chase scene. Well done action in a Dutch movie? Holy crap. Got my adrenaline pumping.

reply

I totally agree. One of the greatest chase scenes. A bit 80's-like, but a perfect one.

reply

For me, it was a really great movie. Not just the story, but more the atmosphere, the 80's, Amsterdam, a non-hollywoodian action movie for once. And a great worship chase scene !

reply

This is more entertaining than most James Bond movies (certainly the latest ones :( ). It has horror, romance, comedy, mystery... and all around great movie! (And the lead babe looks good enough to eat!) I'd rate it at least a 9.

reply

As a Dutch guy I give this movie a 8. You have to understand back in 1988 they couldn't do very big special effects compared to now but it still kicks ass especially the boat chase. I also liked the creepy mood like someone swimming in the canals killing people. And it has one of the coolest lines by Tatum Dagelet: 'kijk uit man die hele kaart gaat naar de klote'.

reply

ITALY says 8/10

great movie, great characters. amazing story... it's a great thriller not a horror, and with comedy elements. well done (the lift is a bit worse for me)

and the chase scene in the canals is in-cre-di-ble. (maybe the best ever filmed)

p.s. tatum dagelet (born 1974 like me) ... I loved her ...

...buongiorno amsterdam

I will give a 8 for this movie, great action and much fun.

@ dannymallow, als je idd uit 1974 komt is je Nederlands erg slecht, geen hoodletters begin van de zin, namen (van personen en je eigen hoofdstad) einde van een zin eindig je met een punt.

I gave it a 7.

I rather enjoyed it and thought that it was an above average slasher film.

A solid 7/10, I found it a way entertaining and nicely paced film.
