When it's "a few short years" and it involves Reagan welcoming them, then we know it's in the time frame of 81-88 but the movie was released in '88.
Early in the film, we see a theater advertise "Rambo 6", yet Rambo movies were released in '82, '85, '88; i.e., Rambo 3 was out in '88.
Oh, and Rambo IV is due to be released in '07.
Sly Stallone was born in 46, so he'll be playing Rambo [again] at the age of 60-61.
Actually the movie takes place in 1991, so technically that would mean Rambo 4 and 5 would've been released back to back in '89-'90

Actually the movie tells us the Newcomers arrived in 1991 and now it's three years later which makes it 1994. Which means that Reagan must have gotten elected for a third term in 1988 since he was there to greet the Newcomers in 1991. And since the newscaster I believe referred to him as President Reagan instead of "former" President Reagan, he might have even gotten elected to a fourth term in 1992.
But then again when Sykes and Francisco run the Newcomers records at the police station, it has records dated back to 1988 which is three years before they arrived on Earth. Methinks a few discrepancies made their way into the film.

Listen to the news and you'll hear "Representative Ronald McDonald" & "Senator Big Bird".
In the military, it carries over, but for the purposes of etiquette, it should be Lt. Col. and above.

Captions help, but I turned it up and everything matched.
There was another scene with a date somewhere in it and it said 91'. I remember that vividly.
.............The Alien landing took place in 1988, the year the movie was released, and Reagan was still President. Most of the movie is set, three years later, in 1991. Rambo six is yet to be made.
