I saw the series first, then I saw this movie so I liked it. The review on the movie's page is right in saying that the social commentary and such is downplayed in the movie. Well, what do you expect for 90 minutes in the late 80s? It was explored in the series which I think works better.

No, I totally agree!
Even though it is not what it might appear to be at first sight:
No real science fiction movie, the sci-fi is only a nice add-on.
It's about hostility turning into respect and finally friendship,
and it does a marvellous job of telling that story!

Ditto. Well said, iris. Saved me having to type it out. An outstanding film.

I saw the movie as a rental way back when it came out on video, then was a fan of the TV series. I thought the movie was great. It always felt, to me, like it was one of those scifi movies that had trouble getting greenlit because it was such a different take on the genre. But that's what made it so cool, it was the steroetypical outer space, alien, interplanetary war story that's been done to death. Very inventive.

I loved it! I just saw it tonight... I was all 'Mandy Patinkin? Hells yes!'

They are showing it right now!

I saw the movie when it was originally released. I liked it a lot, and because of it, was very excited about the tv show as well.

It's getting some air time on FMC this week. I had forgotten about this movie, or actually confused it with the series. It really is a very good movie, I mean come on, Jimmy Caan, what more needs to be said. The opening gunfight scene alone was worth the price of admission. On a side note...isn't it great that so many movies are being shown in the original aspect ratio, this movie had some excellent cinematography that could only be appreciated in the letterbox format.

I want to watch it now that James Caan has passed on. The 2017 Will Smith-Joel Edgerton movie "Bright" is basically this movie, isn't it?
