Recommending subtitles for this is DUMB!

I mean, we're talking possibly THE most EXQUISITELY-ANIMATED Anime or even ANY animated movie EVER, the hand-drawn Avatar of its time, and you "purists" want to tell potential viewers to stick with fucking SUBTITLES for it, forcing people to take their eyes off the glorious visuals on the screen just to understand the dialogue? Fuck that shit!

However, I will admit that choosing the right dub is important. I recommend the dub where the Coach beats up our heroes in front of the Principal yelling "DISCIPLINE!" instead of "SHUT UP!" I forget what the names of the dubs are.

I pretty much watch subtitles for everything, I watch a lot of pretentious, artfully filmed crap.

I understand for some ppl, subtitles makes it hard to focus, but subtitles never force me to take my eyes off the visuals. It's actually easier for me to understand dialogue via reading than listening anyways.

I use subtitles if I'm listening to other music over the film's soundtrack, yes, even in English programmes, but Akira deserves someone focusing their eyes solely on the glorious hand-drawn visuals rather than darting back and forth to those and words on the screen when an English dub can make someone feel closer to the action. I'd also recommend my idea for Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke and other Miyazaki works, too.

Watch it with original audio and subtitles and experience Akira or you never will have!

I have. I couldn't wait to go back to English fast enough. Same with Spirited Away. It's how I saw both of them for the first time, see?

I agree with TC. Also, I am trying to learn Japanese and I am fascinated with Japanese video games but I think America has better voice acting than Japan. Like take each side in Dragon Ball. This from a person who almost always likes Japanese video game boxart more than the American version. There’s a lot I like about Japanese things but voice acting I prefer English by a lot.
