Frightening and unsettling..

..at least when I watched it first time probably 10 years ago and the last time I saw it, a long time ago too. I was 8-10 yrs old at the times. Tetsuo hallucinating for example, damn it's unsettling. Everyone agree? I gotta check this out soon again.

Well, no wonder. You were too young then.

It doesn't necessarily have to do with age. I'm 19 and I find several parts frightening and unsettling. I'm sure there are 10 year olds who don't think it is. Just depends on the person.

I am still slightly unsettled by his hallucinations...

The first time I saw this was in 1994, and I was 13 at the time and had a growing fascination of anime. I'm 30 now, and some scenes in this film still freak me the f--- out. There are so many examples I could give, but one scene that has always bugged me was the scene that after Tetsuo beats the crap out of the Clown gang member, he starts to hallucinate and then we see Tetsuo drop to the ground, and he has a hallucination where he thinks his intestines are spilling out of his body, and he tries to "pick" them back up. That scene always makes me want to throw up.

In my humble opinion, Akira is really good animated film, but it is NOT for everybody.

I watched this for the second time about a week ago and it was as unsettling as before. I agree with you but it's a good thing though that Tetsuo is such a character. What a movie, had to order this straight away on blu ray

I think there might be a typo in what you said, because I don't know what you mean when you said that Tetsuo "is such a character."

Is there? Isn't "such a character" a common expression? I'm not exactly sure what it means though but I meant Tetsuo is a great character, creepy and *beep* crazy

I notice loads of people say they saw this when they were a little kid. I mean, just because it's anime doesn't mean it's for kids. Before the days of Pokemon and such, anime was basically just known for being 'cartoons for grown-ups'.

I mean, in the US it's rated R! Over here in the UK, it's a 15, meaning no-one under 15 can watch it. Why do no parents look at these things?

"I am a mushroom-cloud laying motherf-cker, motherf-cker!"

totally, I had to order it to watch it for the first time, and being 16 now I still think it sets a mood.

The part that was most unsettling for me was Kaori's death, that crunching sound followed by her screaming *shudders*

The thing about the movie that frightened me the most is the mutation scene at the end. The whole guts hallucination doesn't bother me because I see people's guts fall out of them every time I watch 1000 Ways to Die. Even at 17 years old, the mutation scene scares me and I can't sleep after watching it cuz every time I close my eyes, all i see is that horrible veiny blob!

It's a rather nasty film. Young children definitely should not be watching it.

My kids 5 , and im starting to show him bits of it on vhs on an old crt , hits a little bit softer that way i think. He's a smart kid tho he gets its more of a teenager suitable movie. Just bits so far , im sure were gonna watch 90% of the movie soon. One or 2 parts ill forward.
For the exposure to the music alone i want him to see it.

I agree with the description in the headline of the post. Bit its also really fucking cool
