Explanation anybody? I was kinda confused that she was trying to stop the zombie outbreak and followed the instructions but in the end she turned herself into a zombie.

The instructions to stop the zombie outbreak probaly had backfired or the instructions to stop the outbreak probaly needed a sacrifice. I think its most likely the first reason.

I just watched it and when she is reading the book, she says that to close the gate, the person doing it, has to willingly sacrifice his/her soul.
