I Really Tried...

I picked this movie up because it had Bill Pullman in it, and I seriously tried to get into it...but I personally found it very boring. Some parts were funny, some were awkward, some annoying, most were depressing. I understand it is a drama, and that it's a relatively serious movie, but for me it dragged on and on and I kept listening to it in the background as I went and did something else on the computer. I wanted to like it, and I can't say I hated it, but I just couldn't get into it. Was I the only one?

If it can go wrong, it will go wrong.

I didn't find it boring so much as terribly depressing and even uncomfortable. The quirky family bits were ok, but I hated the part where his estranged wife tried to push more stupor-pills on him. To numb the pain, numb his feelings. It felt as though that was a theme of the whole film, dumbing down to a stupor of living, avoiding life in so much of its chaos and colour, so Macon had a (boring) feeling about him that spread through the movie.

Halfway through it I was having the same thought, I think it's either I can't understand William hurt's acting or Macon was incredibly boring to watch which I think ultimately was a point in the movie, he's empty or rather devoid of any feelings except for the parts where he's with Muriel and he brings pizza, fixes the sink.... Altogether is not a film for general audiences bit te ending made it all worth it, best ending I can think of. Full closure and the prospect of a happy future.

My sister and I saw this in the theater- I had read the book, so I knew what to expect. I loved it, but she had mostly the same reaction you guys did. She thought it was really boring. But she told me a few years later that she came across it on cable while ironing clothes and she couldn't turn away from it. She said she didn't know why she liked it so much more the second time, but I suspect she caught more of the subtle nuances of the film that she missed in the theater because she was so bored. Anyway, I appreciate that you guys didn't bad mouth this movie, even though you might have been bored by it. There have been plenty of movies I thought I would like that left me bored or disappointed, even though other people loved them.

Bill Pullman seemed too young and too attractive for this role/character.
