Can anybody tell me in what city/state/region this film is supposed to take place?

In the beginning, when Spike is listening to a radio show while laying on his bed, the announcer states they are in 'Garden City'....which is New Jersey.

yup and a scene at the school a kid has on a lettermen jacket that says garden city school.

Did they specifically give the state as NJ? I ask because I do not remember hearing NJ mentioned, and also because there are many cities in the US named "Garden City". Also, I do not believe the Garden City in NJ is a particularly popular/populated and/or well-known "Garden City" compared to some of the other Garden Cities in other states.

also the 976 message says NOVEMBER 28th 1988. it's warm wherever they are, at that time of year.

Also the car that nearly runs spike over in front of the auto shop has a California plate. Not that it couldn't be from out of town. But. That plus it's warm there in December.. CA.
