Scene and quotes used from 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas'

Did anyone else catch that this film totally used a part written in the book Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson?

I'm talking about the part where they're driving in the red convertible, pick up a southern type guy with an accent who states, "I've never ridden in a convertible before!"
Downey, I believe correct me if I'm wrong, then states, "We're you're friends - we're not like the other ones."
Then Sutherland makes the comment, something like, "Quiet or I'll have to put the leeches on you."

This is an excerpt from the book. Is the screenwriter related to the author or what?

I'm just curious.....

Aside from my question, I really loved this film for years.

It wasn't a convertable

if it was, they were probably just quoting the book
it would make sense because they look like the types that would read it

except
it was written
in the 70's...

I could have sworn it was a convertible...

They didn't claim it as a quote in the movie...but maybe credit was given at the end. I hope so!
