Why did they add americans to the cast to begin with?

If my research (just the imdb cast list, heh) is accuurate, they started adding americans/canadians as early as the second season to the show... but _why_??
Anything about this mentioned on the dvd's or other sources that address the 'need' to do this on what's supposedly a British show?

Well Archie Hahn was in the very first episode (not counting the pilot) if I remember correctly, so Americans were always part of the cast. They obviously thought "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and were always open to the idea of American/Canadian cast members.

Fair enuff. It just looks a bit odd they call this a british show when neither of the two performers that appeared the most are british (Colin & Ryan, if my counting is accurate).

They could have chimpanzees on it as the performers and it'd still be British. I'm puzzled as to why you think the nationalities of Colin and Ryan makes a difference.

I have wondered about this too. I suppose the producers were not thrilled with the way the show was going and decided to check out American improv groups to see if they could get better performers. The rest is history.
