It's all in the numbers...the importance of Three

The significance of the number three played a very crucial role during the first season of War of the Worlds. First of all, let's analyze the aliens and how the importance of three plays with them. This number pretty much rules their existence since they are referred to as the people of the Three and the aliens live to serve "The Three" (the Advocacy). The first season writer's Bible said that the aliens emigrated from a third planet with three moons, that revolved around a sun in the Pleiades star system. Also, it lay in the middle of the constellation Taurus. This supposedly explained their obsession with the number three and their inability to accept any sort of failure. The aliens mated every nine years (3x3=9) and the Advocacy were a triad functioning as one. And alien units were always divided into three. The alien warships also attacked from three sides and flew in threes. Alien technology and weaponry also were based in three (and looked triangular- such as the alien eggs).

During the first season there were THREE times we saw a pseudonym for a writer (Forrest Van Buren, Sylvia Clayton and Sylvia Van Buren).

In Tarot this is the significance of the number three:

3: Three is the number of the triad, of the unit formed by duality (2) and its offspring (1), of the three faces of the goddess (virgin, mother, and crone), of the creation that is made possible by joining forces with another, the tripartite genitalia of the male and the genital triangle of the female.

The world is "3"-dimensional and the number is perceived as being complete. Triangular forms as been used as amulets and medieval alchemy lists three matters that work inside humans, (the body, soul, and spirit) and modern chemistry does the same (acids, bases, salts). Supreme deities and lesser beings often appear in literature in a set of three (including the Christian Trinity, the Greek Moira, Germanic deities to name a few). Even Satanism imitates the holy trinity with 3 terrible forms. In folktales, people tend to die three days after being touched by a demon. Demonic animals tended to be three legged, and in literature (such as Macbeth) three are needed to perform black magic.

I got the last part of this information from websites, but I found the information utterly fascinating and I wonder about the in-depth thinking the writers of the first season put into the number three.

Also note that the number three was important for their reproduction: there were three distinct "sexes" if you will: Male, Female, and a group called Carriers. Male and female got in on, so to speak, and the result was placed in a carrier to mature until it was time to emerge.

It was mentioned more than once in the novelization. There was no point in the Supreme Commander and the Female Advocate to mate - they both accepted this as there was no Carrier to place the results in.
