Wow, still not many comments on this great series...

Seriously, check this out everyone. It's great...funny, informative, creative, and filled with observations that are as true today as they were in 1988. Lots of cameos too, but most of them (not all though) are more effective if you know the candidates from the 1988 election season.

But honestly, I was 8 years old in 1988, and I liked this. So give it a shot.

One tip: it's a good idea to switch on the subtitles even though it's in English, at least until you get used to the rhythm and pace. I know purists will probably hate that I'm saying that, but it saves a lot of time that would otherwise have to go towards multiple viewings and rewinding.

But however you watch it, definitely do so!

Look at the comments that compare this series Tanner ‘88 to the “West Wing”. Do you generally enjoy ‘Left Wing’ entertainment media propaganda that is somewhat funny?
Regards the 1988 Dem primary race:
The news media had no problem with Al Gore being the first one to bring up the Willie Horton affair in order for Gore to embarrass Michael Dukakis in a primary debate. But it was taboo for the Bush Senior campaign to use it against Dukakis in an ad because it was ‘racist’.
Both the entertainment and news media are liberally biased.

whatever dude you can gripe about liberal bias in the media but when the guys with the guns have a lot of bias headed the other way you pretty much have the upper hand. thank the founding fathers for those wacky ol checks and balances.

i'm half way threw it so far and i really dig it. love the 80s home movie look of the whole thing and the loose feel and editing choses. murphy is great as are the actors playing his staff and i'm getting a kick out of seeing cynthia nixon so young. altman's great.

It should be mandatory viewing during every presidential campaign!
Haven't seen it since '88 and always wondered why HBO produces new tripe rather then re-run one of their greatest.

I saw it through Netflix and agree, it's a one of a kind political film.it including real candidates and really was on the campaign trail in NH. It shows an America and an election not yet in the current free fall decline, wa malaise which began to show when Cointon was impeached- not because this was so egregious but because it marked 1. A change in election methods, campaign financing, and the increase in lobby groups 2. the timing, the net bubble, and then the housing bubble to follow all marked the END of American growth, which really started IMOP directly after the Cold War ended. 3. G Bush Senior's election which marked a president who became closer to the new breed- disconnected completely from national politics and had no ideas on the matter, he pimped the trampling of Iraq forces as muchness he could, and even that couldn't get him elected twice!
The elections shows a electoral group not YET with the level of malaise was not nearly there yet, although we saw a burst after Bush couldn't address domestic policy (thus teaching something to little Bush-war works, dealing w/ ones own country doesn't)
Altman, from what Ive seen, tried to distill aspects of the American culture in a way that Hollywood never did and Indy film hasn't tried too many times as well. How I want to describe his work is on the tip of my tongue- not Americana but......?? Oh well... Captured zeitgeist and churned it out in a distinct style- an American auteur,
