Why Roseanne Barr's bigotry finally became a liability

https://www.buzzfeed.com/annehelenpetersen/roseanne-abc-cancelled-tweet-bigotry-liability

"Barr’s tweet didn’t suddenly show ABC — or her agency, ICM, which also dropped her as a client — that she was bigoted," says Anne Helen Peterson. "That much was abundantly clear to anyone who wasn’t willfully attempting to convince themselves otherwise. Rather, it showed that her bigotry, like all bigotry, is not a matter of a mischosen word. It’s not a slip-up or an isolated instance. It’s a worldview, and it’s a pathogen: It can be covered up and it can be ignored, but it can’t — without major substantive, contemplative, and personal work — be controlled. And to be uncontrollable in Hollywood is to render yourself a liability to the brand and, even worse, to the bottom line."

Yeah, well said. Glad to see posts like this here because most of the comments I see here, even after all the trolls and bigots I have put on ignore are mostly ignorant. The odd thing is that Republicans seem to have punctured this standard with Donald Trump, and I think it is a very toxic and dangerous thing. I don't think it is hyperbole to compare Trump to Hitler anymore, he seems to be deliberately moving in such a direction. Already I think he has committed crimes against the country and humanity just by being such a destructive and destabilizing force in everything he has done. The guy belongs in prison.

With everything from the WH--I think people just reached breaking point. What was 'academic' in the 1980's is now everyday. And people just got sick of it.

reply

you don't discuss it after it's happened you don't do it in the first place.

I am a Republican, but I agree. Also there are a lot of us GOP folks that are starting to agree with yor opinion without even seeing it here..i.e., you're aware, I'm totally sure, of John McCain (RIP) and his family and what they had to go through with the completely well-known McCain-Trump feud, then there briefly was the humiliation of Dr.Blassey Ford (the one that brought the rape charges against that judge)..) and so forth..but I haven't totally broken, but 2020 IS a few fears away..and this is voting day..11/6/18

John McCain is a RINO republican.

You are one of the most hateful people on here and it boggles my mind that you've never been banned.

I think the key is just not to call people cunts and you get away with pretty much anything.

It became a liability the moment she became a Conservative. She was allowed to do or say anything she wanted when she was a Liberal, but the moment she stepped off the Plantation, her former friends and colleagues came after her like a horde of Darkspawn on a rampage. (Dragon Age reference). Even being Jewish or apologizing didn't save her.

She’s a deeply disturbed person who doesn’t seem to have received adequate counseling for her myriad mental and emotional issues. For reasons that aren’t exactly clear, she decided to go into entertainment, and she’s been successful at it. However, she’s also experienced a number of issues related to her immaturity, her inability to control her emotional states, and what seems to be a deep wellspring of self-loathing.

If she had decided to contain her issues and simply do her job, then things would have been rough on the set of her program, but she would still be be part of the production. Instead, for reasons that aren’t exactly clear, she decided to use social media to begin a racist feud with a person who she’s never met, and doesn’t know personally. When confronted with the offensiveness of her postings, instead of profusely apologizing and asking for forgiveness, she doubled down, and was fired for her troubles.

What was worse, rather than taking her vast wealth (Barr is reportedly worth $85 million USD) and getting the help that she so desperately needs, Barr continued to disparage the first individual, she tried to promote herself on a web-based series that never took off, and then she tried to scuttle the continuation of her series that the network allowed to occur to keep her former co-workers employed. Basically, instead of moving on with her life, Barr continues to look for external causes for her internal failings.

You always quote other people from other websites. Do you ever have your own opinion?

reply

It's true, she did have a lot of mental issues behind the scenes. What's ironic is, the stuff she did AFTER stepping off the plantation was minor compared to the insulting stuff she did when she was a liberal.

reply

No that's not true. Sarah Silverman and Amy Schumer owe their careers to gross out humor.
