Favourite Series?

...So what do you think is the best series of The New Statesman - 1,2,3,4??

reply

for me i'd say the first 2...especially love "3 line whipping" and "california here i come" and "friends of st. james" for starters.
i love all of the series really but if i was forced to choose i'd say 1 and 2.

reply

Yes, I think series 1 and 2 have more of and satirical edge to them than 3 and 4! Even though I think all four series are excellently written and performed!

But who can forget "3 Line Whipping"!? OMG how gorgeous is Rik in them pink frilly bedsheets!?! - he looks like somthing out of a painting he is so perfect!!

reply

I too liked the first series. Full of 80s Thatcherite humour. Had a nice ambiance to it.

Put I must say that series 4 was the best for me. The dialogue more rasping and ascerbic, the speeches got more rousing, it had everything.

Erm...Tough one...Probably 2 & 3. I love "Three Line Whipping" it's one of my fave eps ever. And I agree about Rik looking a-m-a-z-i-n-g in those sheets...Phwoaaar!!!
My other fave eps are "Keeping Mum" (cracks me up every time I watch it) and "Sex is Wrong" (Alan's expression in the last scene is priceless!)

...All them episodes are just classic! And yes, your totally right about Rik Mayall being the king - he's a comedy legend!!

reply

Nobody compares to Rik! And if someone tries to tell you they do...Just punch them. Not a jury in the land would convict you ^_~

"Yeah..?"
"I've forgotten to put my watch on."

reply

Series 1 and 2 are the best, no question.

Cracking show but I never managed to see the special A.B'Stard exposed. Can anyone give me any details about what happened in it? I can only ever find brief summaries like "Alan reveals his plans for the future". I need to know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

Probably Series 2. The first two are the best because they were made at the height of Thatcherism, which gave them more inspiration. Series 3 and 4 are great, but they felt slightly less inspired, and Series 3 was somewhat "tamer" than the other series.

The one-off special, "Who Shot Alan B'Stard", is possibly the best episode of all.

I think the first two series were the pinnacle of the show, and as much as I like the third and fourth seasons/series, a part of me thinks the show should have ended on the cliffhanger at the end of the second series, with Alan being gunned down and his ultimate fate left unknown.
