Why was Murphy Brown able to last a decade?

The CBS sitcom’s 10-season run from 1988 to 1998 was thanks to its ensemble, its politics, its guest-stars and, most importantly, its ability to stay relevant.

Because it was awesome! It went from my preteen to teen years and I loved it.

You obviously knew the answer before you asked the question.

reply

because it was plausible that somebody needed to work to keep a roof over their head and pay bills.

That would be why the creators, writers, directors, producers, actors and the crew started this show in the first place back in 1988. Lucky for them that the show had a large audience.
The OP answered his/her own question very nicely with this....

"The CBS sitcom’s 10-season run from 1988 to 1998 was thanks to its ensemble, its politics, its guest-stars and, most importantly, its ability to stay relevant."

I thought it was so people could find out who she finally ended up with for a secretary.

reply

didn't really care about that and still don't. With technology now (much more advanced than late 1980's) she can track stuff a secretary would have anyways. Palms, did not exist and cells were the size of boxes.

reply

Well that joke didn't work.
