God I fu**in' hate the Mission Impossible movies with Tom Cruise

Someone here mentioned that it'd be awesome to have Peter Graves on one of the 'Mission Impossible' movies, but that for sure will never happen for one reason... Tom Cruise would be afraid that Peter Graves would steal the movie from him.

The reason why I completely despise those 'Mission Impossible' movies is because they're all about Tom fu**in' Cruise. As a producer Tom Cruise destroyed the whole concept of a unique team equally qualified secret agents, and instead it became all about Tom Cruise, so he pretty much is the one and only agent carrying out all the missions by himself. Tom Cruise head is so way up his own ass that he wouldn't even credit stuntmen on his movies. During the promotion of 'Mission Impossible 2' he kept claiming that he did all hiw own stunts when the Union of Professional Stuntmen criticized Tom Cruise for stealing their well earned credit on the movie.

Tom Cruise doesn't care about making good movies as much as he cares about himself, and that's what the whole 'Mission Impossible' franchise is about... Tom Cruise and his giant ego.

I agree totally. It was already bad enough that it was "The Tom Cruise Show" but they decided to have Jim Phelps be the bad guy. WTF!?!? That's like having Matt Dillon rob a bank!! SSSSSSSUUUUUUUUUUXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Happiness Is Vastly Overrated.

I agree, though it's not just Tom Cruise, pretty much everything about the movies suck anyway.

I agree. I was all excited when I heard they were going to be making M:I into a movie because I was HOPING (in vain, I now realize) that I would be able to see my long lost and beloved cast of the 60s and 88/90 series. When I found out Tom Cruise was going to be in it my hope started to dissipate. I knew that Paramount was going to pump this up as a Tom Cruise vehicle so that they could sell tickets to Tom Cruise fans who weren't even fans of M:I. I went ahead and saw the movie M:I and was so pissed. Not only did they have the gall to kill off the entire damn team thereby destroying the whole concept of MI in the first place, but then they had to go and stab me in the heart by making a historical tv hero such as James Phelps a bad guy (I wanted to throw my popcorn at the screen.)

Now, I will say I have enjoyed Tom Cruise's acting in other movies....but I wish the guy had not tampered with MI. I will not see any more of the MI movies. It's too painful. I hate hearing all the press about MI and no one even gives any kudos to the original cast of the tv series that made it all possible.

Such as life.

I have to 100% agree with the comments here about the movies compared to the TV series. I was so disappointed when I saw the movie I vainly hopped that it would be more than just a Tom Cruise movie. I was gutted too when they turned Jim Phelps into a baddie I kept thinking maybe I'd misunderstood the story or blinked and missed something. I really enjoyed the original series I especially liked Steven Hill but very much enjoyed Peter Graves as well. I must admit I never realised there was a second series in 1988 until I read about it here on IMDB. I would really like to see it but I don't believe it has been shown in the UK since it was originally broadcast. May be if the original series which I know is coming out on DVD is released maybe they will then turn to this one as well. I hope so.

You stupid ungrateful idiot.what's the matter? Ciao make you push too many pencils?

I can't stand the "Mission: Impossible" movies either, and how Mr Cruise has turned such a great television series - which originally was all about agents working together as a TEAM - into his own private Bond show. I did watch the first film in 1996 but was put off almost instantly when "Jim Phelps" came on the scene. After that, I have not been able to bring myself to watch any more of them - just seeing the trailers on TV make me cringe. And, as so many other fans of the television series, I do, have, and always will completely disavow any of Mr Cruise's actions...

Very well said and I agree with your comments as well. The original
MI tv series was all about a covert undercover operative team
and its leader going on top secret missions. And Tom Cruise and
Paramount have ruined the concept from the first movie on by
turning good guy and likeable hero Jim Phelps into a traitor who
betrayed the team! Why didn't Peter Graves reprise his role for
the film back in 1996? Whose lame brain idea was it to cast
Jon Voight as Mr. Phelps? In the first movie the entire MI team
with the exception of Ethan Hunt and Mr. Phelps were killed
off and so it was up to Tom Cruise to save the day and the world
as well! The 2nd film was an improvement though again Ethan Hunt
fought off the bad guys and villains single handedly without
even so much as a scratch while never running out of ammo or
even crashing that Triumph speed motorbike! Real experienced
motorcyclists would not ride like he did or else they would kill
themselves. And MI III was a good thriller though by the time it
was released last year Tom Cruise became so cocky and arrogant
and he was released by Paramount Pictures brass, good riddance!
For many years he used to be my favorite actor in cinema though
I no longer like him or his continuing association with the
Church of Scientology. BTW, I live in St. Petersburg, Florida
which borders the city of Clearwater the home of Scientologists
and their so called headquarters. And the majority of privately
run businesses in this town are you guessed it, owned by members
of the church! Though if you were to ask these people they are
sworn to silence and secrecy.
Anyone out there have any other thoughts about the MI films, tv
shows, both the original and the updated series and/or Tom "Big
Ego" Cruise or Scientology? I would like to hear any other comments.

To bring back peter graves in 1996 is stretching it a bit. Even in the revival series in the late 80's he looked very old

reply

I abhor the film the moment I realise that it's not going to be a team effort and will focused solely on Cruise. To make things worse, the writers had the gall to turn Jim Phelps into a villain of the story. I really wish someone had fire whoever came up with that idea.

reply

Actually Peter Graves was going to do the film until he found out that he was the villain AND that he was to be killed off.

I think he said he would've done it if he'd just been killed off, but the "Jim Phelps is the villain" just didn't sit with him.

It's a shame. I could've handled the character dying, but him being the villain was just dumb. Still wish Graves would've done it though, just for continuity's sake. Voight is a good actor, but Graves IS Phelps.

Well said and I agree completely. Peter Graves could have and should
have reprised this role as Jim Phelps as long as the character
would have been the good guy team leader we remember from both
the original tv series and the late '80s revival. Had Phelps
continued to be the good guy and not a traitor and villain I
would have been fine with that and the script should have been
for Phelps to help nail the true villains and not the way it
turned out near the end. And yes Graves IS Phelps!

It is so relieving to see so many posts that reflect how I feel about Cruise's raping of the Mission Impossible name. I grew up watching the 1980's series that was filmed in Australia and can't stand these new films.
