Jim Phelps question

After seeing the first Mission: Impossible movie, I was disappointed that they turned Jim Phelps into a traitor and I'm sure many fans of the tv show were also disappointed also.

I've only seen a couple of episodes of M:I, the 1980's version and I have a question. Towards the end of the 1980's series, were there any hints that Jim Phelps was becoming frustrated at his job and was becoming "darker"? Again, I've only seen a couple of episodes but I always seem to remember the character of Jim Phelps as a patriot and someone who cares about his team-members, especially the episode when he plans a rescue mission of his friend Barney. Thanks!

There were no signs whatsoever that he was becoming frustrated with his job. Remember, he'd already retired before and he ended up coming out of retirement to do his job again. He was a patriot in every sense and he cared about his country and his team members and it showed up until the very last episode

As much as I didn't like the 1988 version, I never saw anything that slowed Jim going over to the "Dark Side." I've always wanted to say that!

I think that the producers of the 1996 movie may have thought that if they showed Jim as a villian, the hard-core fans might go to the movie to see if what they had heard about Phelps was true. And this would have meant higher box office.
