I'm pretty sure this show was loosely based on another series in the UK, much as "Sanford & Son" is an American-ized version of "Steptoe & Son" and "All in the Family" is an American-ized version of "Till Death Do Us Part." The trouble is, I forgot the title of the British version. Any help?

You could be thinking of the excellent 'Shoestring' starring Trevor Eve which was broadcast on BBC tv late 79 to late 80. Local radio dj doubles as private detective. Well worth a look.

Shoestring springs to mind from the late 70s/early 80s.
