If they were the only humans in the whole of Narnia, to populate the country would have involved incest. If there were other men and women, they could populate the country, and the four kids wouldn't need to worry about it.
And I agree with the above poster. Next time perhaps you might be bothered with punctuation. If you're truly as bored as you say you are, it shouldn't be that much trouble to add a few more keystrokes.

There were other humans in Narnia and the surrounding areas during their reign, see The Horse and his Boy for details.
But I guess they just didn't have children for any reasons...
I mean, look at Queen Elizabeth 1, she never had children either.

first of all...how do you know they didn't? i doubt they did, but i guess its possible...
second...try reading a Horse and His Boy...it may clear up a thing or two about Susan
and third...why do they have to have children? maybe they just didn't want to...there are plenty of people who never have children!

The starting block for human population in Narnia is in the magicians nephew, which unfortunately was never a part of this series due to legal technicalities. Also, humans did get into the whole world of Narnia (as opposed to just the country) via other holes etc - That is how the calormene race started. That is explained in Voyage of the Dawn Treader I think... C S Lewis wasn't really a romantic writer, and it just wasn't the way he wanted the books, why question it?!

consider this...if the House of Pevensie produced offspring, there would be a new high king in successive stories, which would have trashed the entire continuity of the storyline (i.e, the triumphant return of the revered monarchs of Old Narnia, etc.). Instead, it was more expedient to have the throne revert to the Telmarine line of Caspian. C.S. Lewis was pretty good at keeping a logical flow to the story, even though it was exremely romantic in nature. And the initial reviewer for this tv series really captured my thoughts about this series, which I literally wore out on VHS. It is completely whimsical and enchanting.

i was just wondering about where all the humans came from. I read somewhere that Frank and his wife travelled south and started the archelanders and calormenes that way. But why couldnt four humans come from archenland and save narnia? i just didn't really understand. Tumnus said hed never seen a human before and yet, there are tons of them just south of them!

I think it was in Voyage of the Dawn Treader that Lewis says there was a 'hole' between the 2 worlds, that some pirates discovered, and they came through and started the calormene race. I cannot remember if he specifically says there were women on board, but I guess we will just have to assume! I guess Tumnus had never seen a human before because the witch, knowing the prophecy, made damn sure no humans entered Narnia. help? :)

reply

yes....thanks! i must have missed that in Voyage of the Dawn Treader! Despite the fact that I've read it 10 times!

actually, when they are grown up & shown riding back to the lamp post in TLTW&TW, they arent actually that old. lucy is only supposed to be about 18, 10 years have gone by. this observation comes from very intimate studies of cs lewis & his books, character, etc. also, in horse & his boy, it explains about susan & why she, although pretty, never married. & yes, the hole between the two worlds explains why they didn't come over & *save* narnia. however, even if they had not seen humans, they knew what they were or else there would have been no reason for the white witch to issue such an edict about *sons of adam* & *daughters or eve* however, the best explanation for why they had no children was because lewis didnt write them in because he was planning for a whole series of books & a second generation of pevensie children would have seriously dampered the rest of the books.

reply

Why didn't they have children? The most obvious answer is because it would have meant having them get married and thus not returning to our world at the end of the story.

I understand technically one can become a parent without being "married", but one must put this into a bit of context - (1) they're royals - becoming parents out of marriage would be scandalous! (2) these books were written in an era where becoming a parent outside of marriage was frowned upon - on top of that these books are written for children so it's unlikely Lewis would have even thought of putting anything like that in the books, (3) in addition to all of that, Lewis (as is well known) was a Christian and as such it would have gone against his faith to promote getting involved in relationships that lead to babies prior to marriage. And that reminds me of reason number (4) if Lewis had married the Pevensies off in Narnia in LW&W none of the other books would be here!

reply

Actually on the Narnian timeline they reigned for fifteen years, not ten.
