Lets admit it.....

This show was only good because it was so bad. Cheesy 80's/90's sh*tty horror bad acting syndicated crap fest. lol but i love it that way.

I totally agree!

As much as the show can still give me chills when I watch clips, one that was creep, cheesy and funny at the same time was when Freddy had on those headphones while scratching some records on the turntables. Jam Master Freddy in effect! The name of that episode escapes me at the moment, but I think it was "The Bride Wore Red."

reply

You didn't think it was bad in the 80's though (probably... I don't know you... Haha...). It's only when we watch it now that we cringe "did I find this scary/good/watchable etc."?!

I first saw one episode of this series in 1990 when Iwas on a so called "language travel'" to Hastings, UK (I'm Swedish). I managed to buy one vhs with the first two episodes and I was so proud. I was 14 yrs old at the time and I came home a hero, I showed this new Freddy-series to all my friends (hyping it, if you will, didn't know that concept back then, though...)

The series was never aired in Sweden, though. Until now. One of our "channels you pay for" (don't know what you call it) has started airing it. Fenomenal! Nostalgia rules!

But, back to the subject: it is really, really bad. The stories are bad, the acting is bad, the "effects" are bad... How bad did Robert Englund need money at this time, is my question?

I'd really like to see all episodes, just for fun, but it is definitely not a "need-to-see-before
-you-die".

Anyone who had seen the whole series? Favorite episode?

reply

Well no, can't say I agree.

It's dated yes...but there are still some really good stories in the series.
The show had a unique double story per episode thing going on and over the series the universe grew and you'd have sequel and prequels to other episodes and references/tie-ins too.
It was a really good anthology show one worth paying attention to.

The thing the I felt ruined it was tying into the Nightmare series. All the Freddy stuff was inane and became a distraction over the actual storytelling. Freddy's interruptions were annoying.
It's a shame they didn't put more effort into it and relied on it riding on the success of the Nightmare film series instead of treating it as the unique anthology show it really was.
I've always felt if they had removed Freddy from the show and just made an anthology TV series, it would have faired better.

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

Have to agree with above poster. It didn't seem cheesy when it was on the air in the late 80's but OF COURSE looking at it now it is cheesy, but that's the charm of that period of entertainment. The 80's and early 90's was an absurdly over the top era where EVERYTHING was complete over abundance and over saturation.

reply

Well I don't agree. Cheesyness aside, there were some really smart scripts for this show (granted, not all of them).

I remember "it's a miserable life" it was easily better than a lot of tales from the crypt episodes. From the moment he takes the bullet in the head you think it was a dream whereas in fact he realy took it and is now living a nightmare during the few seconds the bullet is entering in his head. While the dream is going further, the violent noises in his head increases (parallel to the bullet going deeper in his brain in reality), when he looks down blood drops in the floor as he had a hole in his head, towards the end of the dream it drops more than at the begining. I specially loved the bit when he enters his room, turn on the radio and hear the news of someone who has been shot in springwood last night (which was obviously the news of his own death but he didn't get it, and neither did I the first time I saw the episode, but i'm a little dumb).

I also loved the unique "nonsensical" mood of the show. Everything seemed indeed over the top but totaly intended, as to give the same non-sense feeling you have in your own dreams.

To bad second season ruined everything.

If you watch Movie Defense Force (or just the episode with Freddy Vs Jason), Jim Stirling hits the nail on the head when he said that we tend to look at the movies with a nostalgic view.

I have 1-4 and I've seen 5-6 but, if I were to take a cold, clinical look at the movies, I'd have to say that the movies were also cheesy 80s/90s horror with bad acting. There really wasn't a whole lot of breakout performances in horror then. (For the most part, that still holds true today.)

Fortunately, I can still take joy in it anyway.

It was on TV when I was little and it used to creep me out (More then the films for some reasons) , when I watch it now I wonder what used to scare me , I have absolutely no idea...

This show had a weirdness about it.

this didn't air in my neck of the woods so when i finally got my hands on a fan made set about 3yrs ago i was astonished at just how bad it was. as bad as some of the movies may be, they seem like Oscar contenders by comparison, and yes that even applies to Freddy's Dead. its just laughably bad.

the show is truly a product of the 80s in every conceivable way and not in a good way. that said, like most shows of the my childhood, while they don't age well, i can now enjoy them for how cheesy they are. its fun to see this stuff and laugh.

but it was also surprising to see so many actors who would go one to become famous like Marishka Hargitay and of course Brad Pitt!! I've been watching Growing Pains recently on our retro channel and Pitt even appeared on that one. lol

but i'm a huge Nightmare fan so i'd be more than happy to spend money if they ever released this officially. the fan set is fun and has LOADS of cool Nightmare related extras but the episodes look TERRIBLE. you can tell its just copied from VHS tapes down to seeing the ever famous tracking lines going by now and then. though that does add to the nostalgia. lol but i wouldnt mind a proper looking version, i don't need SUPER AWESOME HD, but the retro channels on tv play many 80s shows and they all look as good as the day they aired.

another interesting thing, you can tell this was made during Nightmare 4 and 5 because his makeup in the first season is the same as Part 4 and then it looks like Part 5 for the rest of the series. Englund must have had a crazy scheduale between 1988 and 1990!!

reply

I bought the set you speak of with all the extras a couple years back, but the episode quality is about as perfect as can be. Looks better than when it aired on Chiller, actually, and free of watermarks or edits. Unless you have a different set? *shrugs* I know that one has been around for like 10 years, so I'm sure it's undergone changes.

reply

oh yes it has gone through changes, they've "re-released" the set a few times and apparently the video keeps improving each time. so i probably have one of if not the original version hence the 1985 VHS quality. lol

but like i said, as annoying as it was it was still nice to finally see the series and seeing all those video issues was also nostalgic anyway so its all good. i don't regret buying it, i just regret not waiting til the better versions! lol

I don't think anyone ever thought it was a "good" show. Even when this show was in production, I doubt too many of its viewers thought it was gold. But if you were a fan of the franchise and the Freddy Krueger character, then you could appreciate having this as something else related to it.

reply

That's exactly right. They were THAT bad they were good. It's an old cliché with 70's and 80's movies. The cheaper low budget c**p can be the better stuff to watch.

I'm afraid we're gunna need cover sheets on all TPS reports now. Did you get that memo?

I agree. I've been kind of rotating back and forth between the Friday the 13th: The Series and Freddy's Nightmares lately. It's saying something when the quality of Friday the 13th: the series is way higher than Freddy's Nightmares! Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the hell out of Freddy's Nightmares, but it almost felt like an after school special horror show. haha It's goofy fun! I'm hoping to get my hands on that complete series set once I get some extra money.
