What the heck is this show?

I grew up in the late 80s-90s and I'm an avid TV watcher... But I don't remember this show at all. It comes on randomly all a sudden on Antenna TV about a week ago.. So I finally look it up after noticing Ben Savage playing the kid. All I see on this board are fans begging to put it on TV or DVD... Was it really that popular? What network was it on? I really don't remember it.
Listen Lady! No one in this Family Barks!

It was on NBC and the ratings were good in the first season. Eventually ratings were dismal by the final season and I wonder if that's because the show's time slot moved around so much.

Maybe you don't remember the show because of how it jumped around to various times/nights, or maybe the cast didn't grab you. Back then I doubted Judd Hirsch could carry this show, then realized how intriguing he was to watch and the other cast members helped keep it entertaining.

Mag, Darling, you're being a bore.

Good commentary.

And yes, it was up to Judd Hirsch to carry the show, but I really liked the other characters as well including Kate, Ralph, and especially Kirk. Kirk was such an a**hole, you actually enjoyed him.

This show was hyped a bit and made a good splash back when it aired. It's a good single set ensemble stage play type show. Equally depressing and funny with eccentric characters. Didn't stay popular for long.

reply

Well it did run for a full four seasons. That's not too bad.

It came on right after Cheers so it was popular in its first two seasons. Then, it got moved around and was forgotten about. If you were a kid at the time, a show about middle-aged divorcees probably didn't appeal to you. I was a kid and I liked it though.

George Carlin: It's all bullsh-t and it's bad for ya.

reply

True, I also think it probably had a lot of carryover fans from those who followed Taxi and Judd Hirsch.

John does remind me a lot of Alex Reiger. "Dear John" could be the continuation of Alex's life when he was off duty from the Sunshine Cab Company, with Kate of "Dear John" filling in for Elaine Nardo from "Taxi."

And Kirk filling in for Louie. :)
And Ralph for Latka.

I remember it and think it was on the same night as Seinfeld.

This was a good show. I used to watch it with my Dad after college when I would visit him on Thursday night's. Having to follow it around time slots when it was moved sucked. I hate when they do that.
Kirk was freaking hilarious. Oh man, did we ever laugh at him.
Paramount, hello? Hello, Paramount? We want our freaking DVDs!!!

Those who could identify with sad sack Judd Hirsch could identify with this show.

It was funny. I remember the British lady was funny. I recall she was the leader of their group therapy. She’d always get all wide-eyed and ask the same question: “Did it involve anything...sexual?”
