Are there people who believe he brought the American hostages held in Iran home?

Well... All those nameless historians are wrong. After all, I grew up being told Christpher Columbus discovered America. Jimmy Carter could have sent an envoy consisting of the Pope, Dalai Lama and Jesse Jackson with a shipment of gold ... and it would still be Reagan who deserves the credit not the Keystone Cops.

There was never any doubt who the Prime Mover was when the "when" and the "how" of the hostages release transpired.

The Reagan myth is still alive and well. No doubt about that.
Who do you believe was the Prime Mover and why, if you don't mind my asking? I like hearing differing opinions.
I was raised to hate Carter; not just as President but on a personal level, which is rather ridiculous. Additionally, I grew up being told that Reagan was the greatest thing that ever happened to America. And the Christopher Columbus thing, although I do remember that Viking guy, and a Spanish one. 
Oh, did you watch the American Experience episode about George H.W. Bush? I caught it last night/this morning.

i remember the conversations on campus ... and how there was no doubt the hostages would be released if reagan were elected and then before he took office. but the reasons are sometimes misconstrued. the iranians may have been fearful because they did not know what reagan would do. this would have been wrong. in the end the hostages were returned because they knew what he would do. (OH NO ... NUKE THEM! ... i can hear the voices out there ... relax and take a pill). all great leaders be he/she REPUBLICAN or DEMOCRAT ... LIBERAL or CONSERVATIVE had the ability to access a situation and take a measured response. and that is the quality as president that reagan had and what the iranians should have feared ... a measured response. reagan was always a persom who could say what he means and mean what he says.

carter's leadership qualities were summed up by his wife, rosiland when she said jimmy came to her and said, '...what will i do if that doesn't work'.

Additionally, I grew up being told that Reagan was the greatest thing that ever happened to America.
i don't know about the 'greatest' but even when you put ideology aside he rates close to great if compared to our present cast of charachters.
And the Christopher Columbus thing, although I do remember that Viking guy, and a Spanish one.
since you asked here is a post i made to another board in answer to the question... did columbus discover america...

Those points are all Eurocentric. How can someone "discover" a land when there were already people there?

Response
The one thing you fail to do is define what a "discovery" is and why the Columbus expedition does not succeed in fulfilling the definition. You have chosen the easy way out by making a blanket statement and coming to the conclusion that all who disagree are wrong.

So the first thing we must do is define the key word ... Discover or Discovery ... A very simplistic definition is ... To be the first, or the first of one's group or kind, to find, learn of, or observe. This is simplistic because it fails to state the other elements of a discovery. Yes it is true that in order to be classified as a discovery it must be new. But there are two other elements which also must be present. In addition to being "new" it must be communicated to others and the discovery must in some fashion be replicated.

Given the definition we can now proceed to list those things which can be classified as discoveries.

Medical ... Antibiotics, Drugs (Viagra) have a discovery at its base.

Inventions which came to being during the industrial revolution all have a discovery at its base.

Cotton gin, auto, trains, planes

And last but not least "Land" ... Yes new land can be classified as a discovery as long as it adheres to the definition set forth. Does it matter that there were people already living there? NO

Prior to 1492 European knowledge of the Western Hemisphere was "0". What Columbus did was to shine a light on the unknown and bring the knowledge back to Europe.

Why does it matter not that there were people there already? Because they themselves had no knowledge beyond there king's or chief's domain. They might as well have been living on an island not knowing of anything beyond the surf.

The communication of the discovery back to Europe spread like wildfire and the voyage was replicated over and over.

Could the Indians have discovered Europe and communicate such a find back to North and South America? No... They did not have the writing skills required ... the navigational skills required ... or even the political development required. From the first migration down from the Northwest during the ice-age (were there ancestors Europeans - food for thought) till 1492 there advancement (political, economic, philosophical) was negligible and would have remained so had Columbus not arrived.

So yes Columbus did DISCOVER America...

That's a very human thing to think and say. I think Carter was ill equipped as a president, but I do believe he's one of the finest statesmen our country has ever had.

Reagan's leadership qualities were summed up by James Garner. "Ronald Reagan wasn't qualified to be governor, let alone president. I was a vice president of the Screen Actors Guild when he was its president. My duties consisted of attending meetings and voting. The only thing I remember is that Ronnie never had an original thought and that we had to tell him what to say. That's no way to run a union, let along a state or a country."

yes, but of someone ill equiped to be president. rosiland's remark shows jimmy did not have the propper thought process to be president.

if a mother witnesses her child hit by a car you would expect her to be hysterical and beside herself. but if that mother were also a medical professional/ you would expect her to gtab a blanket to keep the child warm ... stop bleeding... etc

i didn;t sleep easy knowing jimmy is consulting his wife or daughter and not his advisors

Still losing sleep? Not really. I have just woken from a 36 year nightmare that we would somehow repeat history. When I came to my political senses I realized the reality of things are much worse.

If you watched the episode, you know that the plan was in fact in place. They waited and waited in the White House for the phone to ring on inauguration day, but time was running out for them to get to the ceremony. So they had to leave to attend that. I was in college in January 1981 and I distinctly remember watching the inauguration and the luncheon afterwards, where the 1st thing Reagan said was "I have just been handed a memo that states the American hostages have just cleared Iranian airspace." [CHEERS***APPLAUSE***WHOOPS OF GRATITUDE]

The plane in fact did not leave until one minute AFTER Reagan was sworn in. Again, if you watch the episode, you would know there was no way in fresh hell the Ayatollah was going to let that plane leave the ground while Jimmy Carter was still President.

So go ahead and believe he negotiated this release...he in fact DID, BUT it was AFTER the 1980 election. He was already a lame duck and the Iranians and the Ayatollah knew they wouldn't have to deal with that peanut farmer anymore. So they agreed to the terms, BUT they made damn sure the hostages did not leave Iranian airspace until AFTER Reagan was officially sworn in.

I firmly believe if Carter had been re-elected those hostages would still be there or worse, executed,
