Dean Shek really does his best to ruin this film.

What a hammy, crappy, unintentionally comedic performance. Without him this film would have been way better.

I thought Shek was the best thing about this film.

Interesting face, interesting character - weird in a compelling way.

And I thought the comedy was intentional.

The feeding scenes were SO over-the top that they seemed to be deliberately so - maybe something to do with the melodramatic Chinese soap tradition?

Anyone else dig Shek in this?

Manton

Time for a new signature, perhaps. Hmmmm...

I just recently rewatched it, and couldn't help but roll my eyes during most of his scenes. The sad thing is that, when he's not hamming up the crazy, he's otherwise great in the rest of the movie. I just chalk it up to Tsui Hark's focus on his character and Woo creating essentially two halves of a movie intercut with one another.
