A lot of smoking in this movie

Just saw it and absolutely loved it. One thing that kind of stood out though was the cigarette smoking that the characters did in this movie. I mean especially the kids, both the leading boy and girl had a cigarette in their mouth much of the time. And even in the very final frame of the movie, there's a cigarette hanging in the mouth of the boy (who was some 15 years old).

I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just something I noticed. In 1962 (when the events took place) there was little awareness of the bad health effects of smoking, therefore everybody smoked. And in 1987 (when the movie was made) the movie industry had not yet become so responsible as to not show actors smoking. I guess if the movie was made today, they would probably show much less smoking.

I read on this board that the movie is (was) on some advised watching list for students in Australia. I bet if the "officials" should rewatch it, they would take it off the list because of the smoking (or demand the cigarettes be digitally removed).
