This is a strange one! Didn't quite connect with it on the first viewing experience in a cinema. Found it pretentious and unappealing and didn't like Cathy Moritary or her annoying boyfriend Mike in it—I did find David Keith mesmerising. The film haunted me though and after subsequent viewings on video started to warm to it......I now think Moriarty is stunning and watch it for her as much as Keith. According to the trivia, the director wouldn't allow his actors to ad lib the dialouge, so she had given a controlled performance without being allowed to reign loose. An acting skill she no doubt learned from her experince with DeNiro on 'Raging Bull'.
The film features some fantastic editing, camera work and sound and it sometimes appears that we are seeing more than we actually are especially during the murder sequences. The undercurrent of violence that permeates this film gives it a disturbing edge that is hard to shake off. The director's detached style and skill at handling the violence in the film along with Keith's nutty, explosive performance gives it an unnerving almost brilliant quality. It's an atmospheric unusual arty thriller to come out of America and the touches of 'Italian Giallo' would have alienated many mainstream viewers of the time.
