the ingenious fish trap

what was with kevin bacons character??? i thought the fish trap was brilliant! i dont get it. i know he wanted him to learn like, the hand catching way, but i still thought that was ridiculous.

I guess Vic is one of those "My way, or the highway" people.

Yeah, his fish trap-like his radio- was one of those bringing-the-city-into-the-wilderness-to-inhance-my-experience things for Alan. And you remember what happened when Alan disrupted Vic's tight-jeaned meditation don't you? "There will be NO radio!" --- so yeah, it's pretty much a 'my way or the highway' type of deal.

"tight-jeaned meditation" lol. So true!!!

How was it a "city-in-the-wilderness" type of fish trap? He built it using items he found on the island, except for the fish net and the bell, which must have been OK to bring along or Vic wouldn't have OK'd it in the first place. It was a very slick little invention.

Vic was mad because Alan didn't do it the way Vic wanted it done.

reply

I agree with the fact that Vic just wanted Alan to do it his way, but I think it was also the industrial-engineering-like Erector Set-ness approach (guided by Alan's book smarts) that pissed him off. That's what I meant: that Alan's ultra-calculated outlook on life made Vic cringe ... Alan's detatchment from all that is natural was something Vic is trying to change about all his boys.

What a load of BS. Vic was a grade-a ultra-control freak. If you didn't do it his way, it was just wrong, plain and simple. Further, what was not natural about the system Alan rigged up? So he didn't use a pointy stick to spear a fish, or catch it with his bare hand. Big deal. He built a trap with stuff he found on the island. Man has been using tools for centuries to survive. Hey, the pointy stick was a tool (and so was Vic).

haha dude CHILL OUT! ... i love how mad people get on this site, especially over goofy pre-pubescent movies like "White Water Summer"! But since I'm obsessed with this movie, i'm gonna debate you on this:

Mr. Block says: "You really make men out of these boys, don't you?" and that gives Vic momentary pleasure ... he's bringing these boys from their 1980's 'city-slicker' mentality into what his perception of nature is (which could be different than Alan's you know).

We both have the same idea just different interpretations ... but isn't that what watching a film is all about, individual interpretation. Perhaps not for "White Water Summer", but that's what makes cinema beautiful, the fact that it's like a fine art piece where everyone can internalize and form different opinions and interpretations.

I'm sick of people getting angry and arguing on IMDB... we're all here for love and love of cinema, let's share it man.
