Vic Was Crazy (Semi Spoiler)

Did anyone else think that Vic was a nutcase? I mean, what parent would want to leave their kid with a dude who would let him hang from a cliff? I thought that a lot of his behavior was strange and that he acted like a psychoboy at times. I will admit that Alan was a big wimp, but Vic should have known better than to let him hang from a cliff.

I always got the impression it was more of Alan being a spoiled rich boy story...

I don't know but until Vic leaves him on the sling I always got the impression that Vic was just trying "tough love" with the "cry baby" Alan...

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinions..

The film is good because it can be interpreted in both ways.

reply

Nope. The kid was a pussy.

While I do agree that evidence suggests that Vic was merely being tough on the boys to teach them, there were a couple of moments when Vic took on a more sinister persona, like when he lost it when Alan was listening to the radio.

It's funny but I always picture Vic's leg healing, he quits the whole outdoors gig and he then goes to work as a security guard at the home for boys 'Sleepers' lol.

That or he decided to terrorize Meryl Streep and her family in The River Wild.

Good point, Alan was a spoiled rich boy and needed that tough love!

I don't think Alan was sadistic or psycho, he was just trying to show Alan a little tough love to teach him a lesson. He had made the mistake of taking it a little too far however, especially when he left Alan hanging alone on the cliff.

He was completely sane...just a little reckless and not the best guide.

reply

Yeah, I agree with you. Vic wasn't a nutcase. He was just really tough on the boys especially Alan. Although, leaving him hanging on the cliff was definately not ok.

That's the issue with the movie from a story point, Vic was a jerk, but maybe it was tough love. Maybe the boys were all pussies. Not sure how we're supposed to feel about these people in the end. I don't think the script made it past the first draft. I still like it though.

Vic was definitely nuts.

Letting him hang from the cliff, making him spend the night on the island, throwing a temper tantrum for not catching the fish the "right way" were all signs of a guy who was a little unbalances. Hell, he just leaves them in the woods overnight. That's highly irresponsible.

As far as I'm concerned, the boys really should have beaten him to death with the boat oars. I know I would have.
