DVD

Can anyone tell why this movie is not available on DVD? I have waited patiently for several years now without success and, considering how much junk is being put on DVD these days, wonder if the political correctness police have somehow blocked its being offered in this format here. I found it in Europe but of course that version won't play on my US player.

Surely u can find a dvd hack for your dvd player, I did that on mine so I can play fine US region dvds as well as Region 2 which is me. Try and put in your model number on google and write hack. It's usually a very simple process which involves opening the drawer and hitting 1,2,3 on your remote.

Best of luck, yes it is a fine film, I only have an old video.

I thought the European DVD only had German dubbed audio. That's what Amazon and IMDB say. White Mischief was shot in English. Why do Germans put up with foreign movies being dubbed? I have seen several American movies on DVD in Germany that only had German dubs. The LawnMower Man (Dir Cut), The Wizard (Fred Savage), and White Mischief. None are on DVD in USA. The German DVDs don't have the original English audio, so they're useless. What a rip.

Be careful buying foreign region DVDs without checking them out on DVD Compare, DVD Beaver, Amazon, IMDB, or some other site. You could end up with an expensive coaster, even if you can play it. Buyer Beware, esp with German DVDs.

Reading subtitles often distracts from properly viewing the primarily visual medium of film.
In many cases this distorts the viewing experience more than not hearing the original dialogue which would be unintelligible to a foreign audience anyway.

The dogma of dubbing ALWAYS BAD and subtitles ALWAYS GOOD should be overthrown.

My point was that the German DVD only has a German dub. That means, it's useless for anyone outside Germany. Americans want English movies in English, regardless how they feel about foreign movies being dubbed/subbed. I agree dubbing may help some films and subtitles may hurt some. I liked City of Lost Children better in the English dub - the voices seemed more appropriate to the movie's tone, and it let me concentrate more on the visuals. Other movies, like Ghost in the Shell, I feel are hurt by the (lackluster) dubbing.

My first choice is the original language, but I might later watch the dub to get more of the film. Highly visual foreign movies might be best with dubs, and more intellectual/symbolic movies might be best with subtitles. I will avoid a movie entirely if it's only available dubbed. The original language should be included always. The dub should be extra, not the only choice.

I didn't say that subtitles are always good or dubbing is always bad. If they do not have good translation, the subs and/or the dub will suck. If they don't give you enough time to read, the subs will suck. If they don't use good actors, the dub will suck. I can't think of many foreign films that I prefer dubbed. Can you give some examples, from your experience? Thanks.

hey people, u can pick up the dvd in Holland and they don't dub, I'm sure u can put off the subtitles too, it was in the bargain bin in Amsterdam airport, schiphol, excuse the spelling, anyway cost me about 4 pounds, I'd been after it as I have the video. Hope that helps

Looks like we're all waiting for White Mischief to come out on US DVD. Wish there were a central location to post requests for certain movies to be released on DVD. Another favorite of ours is Leaving Normal (Christine Lahti). It's frustrating not knowing who to contact. Any suggestions?

"Die letzten Tage in Kenya" (=White Mischief) is widescreen and with optional subtitles (unlike the Dutch version offered on amazon.co.uk, which has burnt-in ones). You can buy it on www.amazon.de.

Non-German TV shows and movies are almost always dubbed in Germany as they prefer dubbing to subtitles. Must be a national preference or what they have become used to. The voice talent used is usually pretty good - not like those badly dubbed European efforts we used to get in the UK. Shame WHITE MISCHIEF is still not available as a good R2 UK release yet!

...now I do it just to watch their f----n' expression change.
