Diana and Jock Broughton have a monetary "arrangement" if they should divorce and he offers her 5,000 pounds for seven years. What would this translate to in today's currency. After confiding to his friend of the amount, he's told by him that he's a 'bit of a chump.' Given the financial straits that Jock was experiencing, how much money was he offering Diana?

Average annual salary in the UK in 1940 was about £250. So he was offering 20 times that. Average 2013 salary is roughly £25,000. Twenty times that is £500,000 per annum or £3,500,000 over 7 years. Generous indeed.
