Her part really wasn't that great and she didn't bring much to it. I was surprised to learn she'd been nominated for it. I was mostly taken in by Lillian Gish, and to a lesser degree Vincent Price. But Gish was the heart and soul of the film. She should've been recognized, not Sothern.

You can't compare Gish and Sothern - Sothern was in the film 20 minutes and was a supporting actress, Gish was in the entire duration as a lead.
I agree Gish was wonderful, Sothern was decent; not exactly Oscar worthy; but good none the less.

Have to agree though. If there were going to be nominations it should have been Gish and Price, who were both fabulous.

I agree Lillian Gish should have been nominated too. She had only 1 previous nomination before (Supporting Actress in "Duel in the Sun") but she did receive an honorary Oscar in 1971. Most of her great work happened in the silent years before the Academy was established.
I agree, Sothern was nominated for her career most likely, after being in movies for decades, starting in the 1930's, and I'm sure the Academy figured this would be her last movie, which it was. Just the fact that she was nominated was a nice recognition after her long and great career. If you want to see her at her best watch 'A Letter To Three Wives'.
