Why didn't depalma get an oscar nomination?

I thought he did a brilliant job and was more than deserving. Perhaps his trademark touches (long single takes, slow motion shots) keep turning the academy away. But I still think this is the best work he has ever done.

Because it's an action movie and action movies usually get snubbed unless there's an actor who's been snubbed in the past in it like Sean Connery.

"You want me to roll 6,000 of these!? What? Should I quit my job!?" George Costanza, Seinfeld

Terrible, schizophrenic directing.
If it'd been serious and dark throughout, instead of having comedy scenes - like the accountant on the bridge - it would've been a classic.
De Palma is a moron, like most directors, including completely preposterous events - like when Connery's character takes an entire Thompson magazine and is only slightly inconvenienced by it. LOL.
...and isn't there a gunfight where a row of bottles are shot as if for target practice? Just loads of unnecessary moronic moments.

In retrospect, I honestly believe this to be the true best film of 1987. This is a rare example of a film that is purely entertaining, lacks depth, but somehow transcends most "serious" films and is deserving of being called GREAT. I don't think I can remember any of the 5 films nominated Best Picture from 1987, and even if I did, I don't think any of them is better than this film.

Fatal Attraction

The Last Emperor
Hope and Glory

Apart from "Fatal", and in a lesser measure "Moonstruck", yep, "The Untouchables" is still one of the most memorable Oscar-nom. movies from 1987, certainly more than the Best Picture winner, a dazzling-looking epic snoozefest like they used to make in the 60's, but well, like I said in my review, it's not 'untouchable', but still better than many better films.

Darth Vader is scary and I [love4] The Godfather

Yeah, I mean no one really talks about most of those movies now. I think the bottom 2 are the typical Oscar-bait films that STILL get consideration. I like the first 3, but I still rank The Untouchables ahead of all of them.

Honestly another great movie from that year that in my opinion should've been nominated is Cry Freedom. Denzel was really good in it and I feel he should've gotten the Oscar over Sean Connery but that's just me. However it actually was nominated for best motion picture drama at the Golden Globes. It's too bad that movie has been mostly forgotten while Untouchables is the more remembered movie.

Hell naw!!!
This movie has some good scenes and excellent Capone character but a lot of dumb and cheesy scenes and music score sucks.
