Why did the cops think she was murdered?

Did anybody else find it kind of odd that right away the police were asking who killed Larry's ex-wife, instead of treating it like a simple missing person's case?

I just watched it again and thought the same thing. I guess the writers just put it in as a plot device. But yeah, it's pretty weak.

I'm not a fan of the actress who played Larry's ex-wife either. I've pretty much disliked every role she's portrayed, which I'm sure subconsciously adds to how irritating her character is in this film.

The cops heard the phone machine message from his girlfriend.

The wife goes missing, so the cops decide to talk to the ex-husband as standard procedure.

The landlord, probably illegally, lets the cops into his apartment. Cops like to sniff around like that.

While they're in his apartment, the girlfriend calls him and leaves a message which includes the words "murder" and "Margaret".

That's why the cops suspected him of murder.
