spanking?

there was this thing that kept popping up with one person spanking another person... what was that supposed to be?

reply

I think the person being spanked is supposed to be Karen Carpenter. Dunno about the spanker.

I think the spanker is supposed to be Karen's father.

I took it as more symbolic than literal. Every time she attempted to assert some independence she was treated by her parents and her brother like a child who needed to be spanked.

reply

Thank you, I was just about to start this thread myself. I was wondering about that too.

reply

Yes, that's exactly how I took it as well.

It is symbolic for the way she is disciplining her body through her anorexia...

duh lol

One of his early shorts, made between POISON and SAFE, is "Dottie Gets Spanked", about a young boy who fantasizes about being spanked. I saw it a film festival in the mid 90s.

It could be taken in a couple of ways. I found it symbolic of how people treated her and how she was treating herself.

Karen Carpenter came from a close knit strict family where she was most likely a victim of some form of child abuse, though I have not yet researched her family life. But I do know they were close knit and strict. The part where she talks to the daughter of Pat Boone who was also anorexic, that girl was one of 4 sisters, all who were abused, their Dad was a very strict Christian, and they all had problems as well. It is very common that anorexics have come from very abusive strict families.
