richard?

In the movie they portray Richard as being gay. Was that true?

Although probably a true bisexual, I believe Rich prefers the company of hyper-blonde women around him these days...

ack!! it's been so long since I've seen this but if I remember correctly, didn't it imply that something was going on between Richard and Karen's husband?was there any truth to that?

I grew up in California during that period of time.

There were constant rumors about Richard - and about Karen as well.

She didn't marry till later in life and never seemed to have any sort of beau around her.

Other women have stated that she just comes/came off as something of a lesbian.

Actually Karen had several boyfriends throughout the 70's. But she had a tough time keeping any around as she was always on the road touring... she even dated a few of the guys that were in the Carpenters' road band.

Her best known boyfriends include David Alley, Terry Ellis (co-founder of Chrysalis Records) and Thomas Bahler (who worked on Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album and wrote the song "She's Out Of My Life", which many have said was written about Karen Carpenter).

In this film, it isn't specifically stated that Richard is gay or bisexual. It's only implied that he has some sort of secret life - something that goes against his wholesome image.

A friend of mine from New York insisted that Karen Carpenter and Olivia Newton-John had a lesbian affair. Actually, in this film, there is a scene (following a description of Karen's friendships with people like Olive) with Karen and a blonde woman kissing each other passionately. Maybe Todd Haynes heard that same Karen/Olivia gay rumor. A lot of the die-hard and obsessive Carpenters fans get very offended when suggestions that Karen might have been gay circulate on the internet, but the rumor seems to pop up every now and then. We'll never really know what went on in Karen's mind or even much about her personal life, or what specific forces/pressures led to her seek solace in the relentless pursuit of thinness.

Richard Carpenter married his first cousin, Mary Rudolph, within a year following Karen's death. Karen was said to have disapproved of their relationship when she was alive. Interestingly, in the authorized biography of the Carpenters, author Ray Coleman never mentions this tidbit. One thing is for sure, though: Richard marrying his cousin is made slightly more disturbing when one considers the many Carpenters album covers with Karen and Richard posing cheek to cheek.

Karen Carpenter is an enigma. This movie raises more questions than answers about her. However, this is not so important in the long-run, since this film is actually more about how a "social disease" like anorexia nervosa can become much more common under the right historical and cultural influences.

I recently caught this film on a website, won't say which one, but I took the implication as sort of a two-fer:

It implied that Richard's fence may indeed have swung in both directions, but moreover, his addiction to quaaludes, which wouldn't have been well-known to the public, and his mother wouldn't have thought he could be addicted to a perscription drug, a common misconception of the day.

I had never heard the rumor that Karen was gay, but it wouldn't shock me. Olivia, well, that rumor is well circulated and most likely true. As far as I remember, Olivia married the son of her lover, and they all lived together. I think the marriage was just a cover for her lesbian relationship. I also think the son disappeared in some sketchy way.

I always heard that Richard acted like he was in love with Karen. He didn't want her to have boyfriends and tried to keep tabs on her and would get very upset and go out of his way to break off her relationships when she did have one.

'You say one word to them, one f-cking word Karen!..'

Best line in the film.

I just watched this. I came here to ask what Karen was referring to when she said that Richard seemed to have some dark secret.
