Sonic Youth cover The Carpenters

Obviously this is OLD NEWS and it was even (unfortunately) mentioned in the movie "Juno," but does anyone remember Sonic Youth's "Superstar" cover? It was really well done and put an eerie spin on the classic. Anyway, I was just watching the Todd Haynes film in a class today and it made me remember the Sonic Youth cover and I got to thinking... Sonic Youth probably watched this movie before performing that cover. It seems to retain a lot of the distorted weirdness of the film. Thoughts?

If you haven't heard the cover and you don't know what I'm talking about, here it is:

I love Sonic Youth's version of "Superstar," which of course was a Leon Russell song before the Carpenters covered it. The "If I Were a Carpenter" album is one of the finest (and weirdest) tribute albums ever. I even have a poster of the cover art hanging on my bedroom wall with all the artists' signatures. And sorry, you can't have my address. ;-)

I've always thought that Sonic Youth cover was pretty lazy, pedestrian stuff and that it made that scene in Juno cringeworthy, given that she had to pretend the song was revelatory. :)

Far more interesting is their song "Tunic (Song for Karen)" from 1990. The lyrics are written from the perspective of the ailing and/or deceased Karen, seemingly speaking reassuringly from heaven. Pretty sure they cited the then fairly recent Todd Haynes film as one inspiration for at least that song at the time. They definitely mention "salad and iced tea" and the phrase "don't let it go to your head", etc, which also appear in the film.

I found it slightly disturbing, but it almost singlehandedly led to my appreciation of both bands in the early 90s.

Some years back, I had a copy of the IF I WERE A CARPENTER album; I think it was obtained through one of those mail-order music club deals. Spooky reading of that song. I'm sure that SY traveled in hip circles at the time, so it's possible that they first saw the film.

I would bet large amounts of money that they have all seen this movie multiple times. I know Thurston and his tastes, he loved Karen and the Carpenters, and this would be required viewing in their circles. I think their version of this is revelatory, and absolutely amazing. I think their version is as good as the Carpenters version, just in a slightly different, and creepy kinda way.

Ii never knew this existed. It's kind of nice. I do like how the video pays tribute to Karen.
