Wow this was bad...

I honestly never even knew there was a part IV, and was shocked to find out it was pretty much the original cast of part 1. I only found out about it as it's on netflix...

It's unfortunate it was given such a low budget & horrible story. With such good actors you'd think warner bros would have given a little more effort. I know SupIII was bad, but at least it had a comic element to it and actually had better special effects than IV did.

In any case I watched it, skipped through a fair bit of it, sad to see it go down this way though...

The movie was made with Cannon Films though which has a reputation for low-budget production.

reply

But these scenes filmed in outer space and the moon had to skyrocket production costs

Why do you troll these boards pretending to be stupid, honest question? I wouldnt mind if it was funny.

reply

Why are you even on this thread, considering how bad this movie is?

reply

Why are you posting stupid replies to look stupid? Lets destruct your comment, you thought it was filmed on the actual moon , you know it wasnt but posted it anyway, why? Its not funny, its boring, just some friendly advice.

If I remember correctly, Cannon took the originally accolated budget for Superman IV, which was about $34 million and siphoned it off to fund their other projects at the time such as Masters of the Universe. When Superman IV was released, what we ostensibly got was an unfinished movie. What should've been a prestigious, polished, big budgeted project wound up being just another example of Cannon's brand of cheap, assembly-line brand of '80s schlock.

I seem to remember that, too.

Yeah, it is a mess. BUT. There is, apparently, a halfway decent Silver-age style movie lurking behind the released version. I really am hoping that some sort of "director's cut" will actually happen because there are things I like about the thing, even as the travesty we all know and despise.

reply

Can't they get the original cut some way some how? This movie was so short u know. It was less than an hour & a half 😟

reply

I believe it would never happen for this movie as there is too much of a mixed view towards the film. Personally, I enjoy it despite its flaws, and would love to see a better version.

The existing cut is out on 4K now and that would have been quite an expense with the video / audio / disc file re-authoring, then there is disc and package manufacturing, distribution and marketing to retail stories, etc.

Yes it could be put on streaming instead, but I just don't think that producing a new version of the film would be at all a consideration of the studio.

reply

Uh..is that because the movie flopped at the theaters? It has a great message behind it with world peace against wars & this holds so so true today with whats going in Russia & stuff. To me that right there is enough to produce the original, unedited version yea.

"I never knew they did a superman iv' was def a thing for alot of people . I remember even Annette o'Toole (lana lang) said as much in an interview she did for the DVDs

reply

Superman 4 is way better than the horrendous Superman 3.

So Superman 3 had "comic elements"? You mean being so goddamn boring to watch?

reply

Imagine if the same film was made today, a Superman film would never receive such a low budget and it would be choc full of very expensive special effects, I don't think it would necessarily lead to a better film but I think it would make a more commercial one.

reply

James Gunn is gonna bring us back a Donner-esque Superman so dont worry Gunn knows how to make CBMS.
