I'll start this with the obvious "I know it's only a movie but"... How was an untenured teacher able to afford to live in a house directly on the beach? The movie was from 1987 but even back then, that house would have been out of his reach. If he rented, it would still be more than a teacher could afford. Shoop didn't seem like the kind of guy who came from money or had a trust fund so how was it possible for him to have such an incredible place?

This is one of my all-time favorite movies (just finished watching it on StarzEncore even though I have the DVD) but I've always wondered about his living arrangements.

Being eligible for tenure means he had to work their awhile and was not on a starting salary.

And as a bachelor and with a simple life style he would have been able to afford it.

Maybe he inherited it.

In the 80s there were still plenty of working-class areas in different areas. For instance, Santa Monica south of the promenade.
