To the owners of this film: How about a DVD version?

Great film! May the gods bless us with a good DVD edition of 'Starlight Hotel' sometime before I die.

yes, i'd love a dvd of this! it's been one of all-time favorite movies since i first saw it back in '87-'88. I was around 8 years old.

Plus, being hearing impaired, there've been af ew lines in the movie that I haven't ever quite gotten. And the vhs isn't closed captioned at all.

Saw this film years ago & I'd love to get it on DVD. I see that a thai company released it on dvd - but unfortunately even that is no longer available.

It looks like an official DVD might be coming - yay!

From: http://www.nzvideos.org/starlight.html

"Regarding dvd copies - There have been regular dvd's that originated from Thailand, but as of 26 January, 2010, when I attempted to obtain more from the Thai distributor, I was told that no more are available.

[..]

The New Zealand Film Commission has re-acquired distribution rights to this film and they are promising that they will be making it available on dvd sometime this year, but have not said when."

Which is all kinds of awesome!

The DVD of Starlight Hotel is finally available from Screenline (Region 4 PAL).

Amendment to original review - although the disk is 4:3, the content is cropped within it and does indeed contain the full width film.

However, they have really botched the transfer to DVD. They've massively increased the brightness so it's blown out and really grainy - the picture looks *awful* compared to the earlier laserdisk transfer I have. it's actually borderline unwatchable... :(

Laserdisk transfer (and basically looking like all versions I have ever seen, tv, vhs, etc)

And here is the same scene on the new DVD:-

You can see it's wider, but has had a severe treatment done on it, the colours changed, but most of all the contrast, brightness, mids and highlights have all been boosted *a lot*, meaning a lot of the film is now blown out, washed out and really noisy. Look at all the lost detail in the sky.

It's horrendously bad and totally ruins it for me. :(

The soundtrack is stereo and sounds better than the mono versions I have, so that's a plus.

So as yet, I still don't have a good copy of this film in it's full stereo, widescreen beauty - probably never will.

I have not seen this movie in years and would love to see it again. I don't know what drew me to this movie, but I remember watching it a bunch, so there must have been a vhs of it at some point.
