Similar to Other Movies?

This seemed somewhat similar to other movies made around the same timeframe. The whole element of the urban high school, senior authority figure showing the young children the right way...not saying it was copying anything, just that at the time that sort of movie seemed to be quite popular.

I was just think about how many movies have the same basic idea, except this is a true story.

I think it's the best of the bunch of the mentor movies.

There are a couple of other movies that are very similar..."Dangerous Minds," "The Substitute" and "Lean on Me" come to mind. "Dangerous Minds" particularly rips the movie off....of course, none of them are quite as good, and watching them only made me want to watch S&D again.

Are you sure you mean "The Substitute"? Haven't seen it, but it seems like more of an action / crime movie than one about a teacher making a difference.

Possibly you mean "The Principal," with Jim Belushi?

"Up the Down Staircase" was really good.

None as good as Stand And Deliver.
" Benny, you silly great fat article"

reply

Freedom Writers and Lean on Me were much better than Stand and Deliver.

This may have not been the first film or the most contemporary picture to tackle its themes, but Stand and Deliver was the one which made the urban teacher drama subject popular. It outdid everyone's expectations, originally conceiving it as a made-for-TV production.

The one it first made me think of was "To Sir, With Love."
Made in '67, set in the slums of London.
Not exactly the same, but it has the same basic idea of a teacher making a difference in an inner city school.

^^^ to sir with love was powerful, especially when the student who comes in late because his mum died last night and he was wondering the streets all night long and Sidney portlier tells the other student, "take over the class" and comforts him.
