One of best parodies ever!

Among Naked Gun, Airplane, I think Spaceballs is one of the best parodies ever, Mel Brooks is a genius, and I hope Spaceballs 2 can be true... instead of another Wayans' unfunny parody!

reply

Agreed. Nobody makes good parodies anymore. Instead of nonsensical poop jokes, so much can be accomplished with cleverly written and expertly delivered dialogue. The "Now / Then" scene between Col. Sandurz & Dark Helmet was perfect.

reply

Are you serious? You think the A$$hole joke was cleverly written? Or "hilarious" character names like Pizza the Hut, Colonel Sandurz and Dot Matrix?

This movie is an embarrasment to comedy.

reply

This wouldn't even make my top 20 list of top parody movies.

I have to agree - I don't hate this movie but I've never really thought it was all that great.

reply

I have to agree, when I was seven years old (the year this came out) I thought this film was hilarious, but I tried watching it again this week as I had such fond memories, but it was so painful to watch. It wasn't funny at all and the jokes were really terrible, and the comedy hasn't aged well at all. I actually had to turn it off halfway through.

If there was ever a case of nostalgia clouding judgement, this was most definitely it.

Definitely on my Top 5 list of classic comedies.

Is Naked Gun classified as a comedy or a comedy parody? If the latter what is it a parody of?

reply

The comedy is genius in this. This kind of spoof have been done before but the jokes are great. The acting is great. There are couple of jokes where the timing is a little off (like the Alien referrence) but it's just funny and entertaining.

Most comedies have low-brow humor, but the humor in Spaceballs is mostly not that lazy, it's actually well-written.

For example, think about the 'What the héll are we looking at?'-scene, where it's like surreal time travel to NOW - absolutely hilarious. The spoofs and mocking of the merchandizing culture of Star Wars are absolutely brilliant.

It has some misandry and typical 'women are better than men in everything they bother to attempt, but they have to still be rescued as helpless victims'-crap, and some other problems, but it's still absolutely funny and well-written movie without any major problems, even as just a movie, let alone as a comedy.

This is one of my favorite comedy movies of all time, Rick Moranis is absolutely HILARIOUS in this.

reply

Indeed! Add Hotshots and Loaded Weapon.
But I find Spaceballs to be even better,at the time this was still fresh and original.

Best parody film ever is Young Frankenstein.
