Queston about Keith

Would you say that Keith is the first representation of a character afflicted with Asperger's Syndrome in a movie?

reply

Say what?

reply

Interesting question? I need to watch again.

reply

Why do u think he has ashburgers?

reply

I think Keith is just honest with himself more than anything. But then again, many Aspie's don't have a problem with that. He was a little shy, but overall pretty comfortable with himself.

Now the younger sister seemed like kind of an Aspie trying to talk all grown up and what her meal is lacking, LOL

Keith didn't strike me as having Asperger's at all...and I know a couple of people with it so I do have a frame of reference. He was a little bit shy and a bit awkward but many teenagers are. People with Asperger's don't really know how to relate to other people in social settings and often have trouble starting and participating in conversations. Keith was a bit shy, yes, but he KNEW how to react in social settings. He also did fine holding coversations. People with Asperger's also don't make friends easily because they don't know how to interact with others. Keith has a great friend in Watts and no problems interacting with her. He would definitely have more friends if he could get over his shyness. He was able to make friends pretty easily with the guy from detention. He was also able to interact well with him and also with Amanda during their date.

Also people with Aspergers often have set routines that they refuse to alter from, and to force them to alter from their schedules can lead them to problems. They also often have trouble communicating...not understanding things like hand gestures, facial expressions, sarcasm, etc. Keith did not display any of these traits. Keith was merely a shy guy who didn't have much confidence in himself. That is not Aspergers. Sheldon off the Big Bang Theory...now there is a text book case of Aspergers, pretty severe Aspergers.

Well said! Asperger's seems to be the diagnosis du jour these days for anyone who's shy, or quiet, or socially awkward. But those things are common to pretty much everyone people to some degree, and particularly when they're teenagers. As all of us can probably testify to from our own teen experience!
