Best soundtrack from an 80s film? Most underrated?

I love the music soundtrack for this movie. I bought it on cassete and later on CD.Although most of the artists are not very famous for much else, it was a very cool alternative new wave soundtrack. I especially love "She Loves Me" from the kissing scene, Lick the Tins at the end, the Amanda Jones tune,and my personal fave: the gem that's not included on the album, the instrumental version of Billy Idol's "Catch my Fall" at the house party climax. For me one of the most underated Soundtrack Albums of the eighties. is it the best one? Better than Pretty in Pink?Breakfast Club?Top Gun?Footloose? Although those others probably sold more copies, I find the SKOW soundtrack a fresh listen years later.

You didn't mention Furniture Brilliant Mind - I love that song and would never have heard it if not for Some Kind OF Wonderful

I agree with all the songs mentioned and would like to add The March Violettes' "Turn to the Sky" and Pete Shelley's "Do Anything".

It is my all-time favorite soundtrack by far, and as soon as I saw discussion about it, I had to jump in!

..and my favorite...."Beats So Lonely" by Charlie Sexton...playing when Duncan comes to the party at the end. What a great song!

I agree... best song in the movie... but I couldn't find the version that plays in the movie... only the original Charlie Sexton version...

Soggy! You are so right, The March Violettes "Turn To the Sky" is such a cool song, I found it on bearshare a few years ago and keep it in my alternative playlist just cause I love the understated but intense guitar parts.

Mahtoska, you are speaking a language that The Sogger can totally jive with! (You took the words right from my lips...without asking!)

I've watched this movie so many times, and I could never figure out why. I mean--It's good...It's very good, but every time that I watched it, I would be like "Why can't I just turn the channel? I've memorized the whole thing by now"

And then I figured out that I was just waiting for the next song to come on in the background, and "Turn To the Sky" is the main song that keeps popping up in the movie (followed by "I Go Crazy"), and you're right--It's the guitar-riffs of "Turn to the Sky" that really bring a lot of energy to the movie at just the right spots.

It has got to be the best song that never got big. I never would've heard it otherwise.

In fact, I bought the soundtrack JUST for that song, and although I was upset at first that it's not the version that's playing in the club, I still liked the other version too and have since grown to love EVERY song on there.

Glad to hear there are others who share my opinion. I agree "Brilliant Mind" and "Turn to the Sky" are great songs. Just the openning rift of Turn to the Sky brings back many memories of the movie, especailly the "date"

It's so hot that they used Propaganda's "Abuse" at the beginning, which is a non vocal version of "Dr. Mabuse." Underground club classico! Shame it wasn't released with the soundtrack.

I agree. The best all time soundtrack of all time. And movie. This has got to be one of the best. Hands down. Don't care what ANYONE says.

This soundtrack really grows on you.
For me -
I Go Crazy, Hardest Walk, and Can't Help Falling In Love are in heaviest rotation.
I have to get some of the new Rhino reissues of The Jesus and Mary Chain CDs.
The SKOW.org website also has clips from the original music instrumentals. The one from the final scene is great.

I just saw the movie for my first time this evening...

I think I am the only detractor... but I would not say this is the best soundtrack for an 80s movie.

Don't get me wrong, it is a good soundtrack.

I have the Pretty in Pink, Say Anything, and Footloose soundtracks as well as this one, and I think Footloose is the best of them all. I do love about 5 songs on this soundtrack. I keep "Turn to the Sky, "She Loves Me," "Cry Like This," "Can't Help Falling in Love," and "Amanda Jones" in constant rotation (not coincidentally they all seem to be featured in my favorite scenes in the movie). I prefer the original version of Amanda Jones in the movie but I love the March Violets so it's still pretty awesome.

It was definitely one of the better ones. John Hughes always did have an ear for what the kids were into musically.

Universal Music should seriously consider doing an expanded version. I never understood why they left off "Beat's So Lonely" (Charlie Sexton was signed to MCA Records at the time, the same label that put out the soundtrack) and it would be great to have "Dr. Mabuse" (?) on there as well.

In fact, Uni's already put out a John Hughes DVD box set; maybe they should do the same with the soundtracks. Yeah, I know they didn't release "Some Kind of Wonderful," but they did have the soundtrack. Personally, I would love to see "Weird Science" finally make it onto CD.

I love this soundtrack, in my mind it sticks out as one of the best ones in the '80s.
I love "I go Crazy" and how they used it in the scene where Watts was Chauffeuring them around and stomping the gas everytime Amanda Jones tried putting on her lipstick.
That and "Can't help falling in love" at the end of the film also really sticks out. I was 16 when this film came out and it is still as fresh today as it is back then.

Yeah, the Beat's So Lonely I got off iTunes doesn't have the break in it like the movie version does...

speakig of JH soundtracks, do I have to buy again the She's Having A Baby? I really really want Apron Strings...

Anyone know if the song/music in the beginning of the movie (played during the opening credits) is an actual song?

Is it available anywhere to download? I always loved how that sounded.

The son is called Abuse (aka Dr Mabuse) Performed by Propaganda

This song is not present on the soundtrack CD, but can be found on their albums A Secret Wish and Wishful Thinking.

You might want to try limewire.

I loved this soundtrack and had the tape back in the early 90's and it makes me want to go and find the cd. I can't get it on Itunes.lol
