Not As Cheesy As Everyone Says

Yes, it's about killer slugs, but this movie is far, FAR less cheesy than all sorts of horror movies from the late eighties. This movie has a lot of things going for it, namely...

* engaging soundtrack (if, early on, misused)
* excellent makeup/effects/gore
* some real suspense
* mood

Also, if you have seen "Pieces", the other easily available movie from this director in the U.S., the dubbing on this one is way better, despite what you might read.

Overall, this movie is actually not bad and super entertaining if you're like me and you are A) up for a cheesy movie, B) Italian horror from the eighties and C) open to just not laughing at a movie but watching it and enjoying it. If you can suspend disbelief a bit, this movie is pretty dang fun.

Also - don't bother watching Squirm - this is the one to watch.

Not to be a pain, but I'd guess there are shadow IMDB users like me ("lurkers") that read user reviews and make decisions on home movies - may I say, as one of these people that took a long, long time to watch this movie, this one is good.

(If you've seen "Pieces" and prefer monster horror to slashers, then twice so.)

All good points and I agree. I thought the production design was far better than much that came out that year. Considering there was no CGI effects available, the problem of showing all those slugs was pretty impressive.

The non-CGI is what makes films from the 80's so awesome. CGI looks fake, films like Slugs look real because they are ACTUALLY ON THE SCREEN.

I actually hate CGI and think it's destroying movies.

I will take real life special effects and molds/plasters over the crap CGI that has taken over films anyday.

I agree. Although there has been much improvement, there is room for much improvement. I just finished watching the entire ENTERPRISE series and the CGI effects were painful to watch. Movies from the nineties such as MIB I are almost unwatchable.

Another thing, many special effects artists had closed shop because all these Hollywood producers decided to use digital effects. Hopefully the trend will come back full circle.

djanimor, I fully agree with you.

Watch some more B grade, this one is hopelessly inept and takes itself way too seriously (a mistake if you are making schlock).

- Soundtrack, at no stage matches what you are watching on screen. Incrediably bad selection of pop numbers.

- Excellent makeup if you haven't seem dummies before or have never seen a horror movie.

- What suspense?

- Yes the overall mood is one of stunned disbelief that this movie was released in any form.

"Pieces" is indeed better but I really liked this one too.

Killer Slugs on the Rampage? This film is pure genius, one enjoyed by myself and close friends alike. Why our heroes did not think to step on the intrepid baddies I will never know however..... who cares! Scream with terror as they slither and slime extremely slowly towards you. Cry with fear as they form a pincer movement, restricting all exits over the course of a whole day. Can you escape? Of course you can!! But do you? No!! This is low budget horror film making at its finest.

Later 80's horror beats any "horror" going now.
Oh, and I like Squirm.

This isn't from Italy. The name Juan Piquer Simon isn't Italian. Some producers were from the States others from Spain.

There are cross promotions like Nightmare City Spain/Italy. The director was Italian, but the good portion of the cast and crew Spain.

Kinda funny how every film of this kind is lumped with Italy as if its the only place in Europe.

reply

Yeah, the director's Spanish, not Italian. While it was shot in north-central New York (Lyons), it's a Spanish production.
