can someone explain?

I watched this movie last night, I liked it. Although there was a marching band passing my house and then fire works during the movie I'm pretty sure I watched every second and that is weird because it seemed like some explaining pieces of the movie were cut out. Once or twice the movie seemed to jump forward without explanation. Anyway, in the end there were 3 things I didn't understand.
1. After the dog is killed and Sheriff Cleve and Matt bury it, why is Matt suddenly not allowed in the house anymore?? At that time he was still considered a good guy!
2. How and when does Charlotte make the discovery that Matt is in fact the murdered man's younger brother?

Both of these things were not in the movie I saw :-)

And lastly, I'm probably being really stupid but I didn't even understand the clue. When the little girl Lucy, right after the murder, goes to the grave site to get the baseball cap, the one who is standing there and who has watched everything and has the cap in his hand (!) is Etienne. Later on the guy with the cap turns out to have been Matt.

Has someone seen this and remembers?

Because she knows her sister likes him and he likes her. She's protective of her sister and has a severe distrust of men.

Probably when she's looking at old photos of her boyfriend. During the last confrontation, she shows the photo to her sister and says "I can't believe I didn't realize it sooner. Look at their eyes!" or something. It seems a lightbulb just went off in her head and everything that was going on suddenly made sense.

Just keep telling yourself...its only a poodle...it's only a poodle!

No, it's not Etienne. We're lead to believe he was there by him saying to Charlotte that she's the only one in the house who has murdered. He didn't actually see it, but he rightly deduced it was her.

The person standing there was Matt (Eric Stoltz) who is in fact the little brother of the murdered Jud Nevins. He followed his brother around (remember Charlotte talking about how he was called "little shadow") and witnessed if not the killing of his brother, at least the disposal of the body.
