It's been a while since I've seen this but I think that Claire, the Ellen Barkin character, is somewhat similar to Mary,the heroine from the cult classic "Carnival of souls".Also,both films share this eery somnambulistic atmosphere and interesting supporting parts.

Also add Chabrol`s Alice Ou La Derniere Fugue to the bunch. But while Carnival Of Souls is ezquisite and creepy as hell, and Chabrol`s film also a solid work, this little number here is silly and clumsy beyond belief.
