Yeah, I remember reading this right after reading The Godfather and thinking the book was incredible...then I was totally underwhelmed by the film.
Kind of a reverse Godfather (The Godfather: Film > Book; The Sicilian: Book > Film).
Not that The Godfather isn't a good read...just very pulpy, not a work of art like the film. The film The Sicilian is just hard to watch though.

I love The Godfather book and feel as great a job Coppala did arguably the best film of all time it still not as good as Puzos novel...
Just way too much detail that could never be covered in a single full length feature film ... Maybe two though
