Why was Tommy locked up?

reply

It's been a long time since I've seen this film but I think he was locked up for having sex with men.

reply

He was locked up for questioning his Mother's way of life and bad mouthing his daddy. It was a disturbing sequence— in concept, not so much detail, —when Tommy's Mother allows his older brother into the shed to beat the living tar out of him with a crow bar.

reply

Tommy was locked up for disrespecting his daddy.

He was beat by a metal rail that his brother Mark broke loose from a metal bed frame, not a crow bar.

reply

Whatever it was, it was still a hard metallic object...........would've hurt like hell. Been a while since last viewed.

I do not think we are ever told why Tommy was locked up, so guesses are just guesses. Isn't the whole point that nobody knows why?

You could say that he represents the millions sent to prisons and psychiatric institutions in the Soviet Union, often for reasons nobody could grasp, as documented by Alexander Solzhenitsyn in ''The Gulag Archipelago''.

reply

We are told why by Ruth and even Tommy lets on, which leads to his brother beating him.
