Good movie, but...

... what a bunch of unpleasant characters.

None of them was even remotely likeable. The one I disliked the least was Elaine Stritch's bigger-than-life diva: she had the guts to make her own decisions, good or bad.
I wanted to strangle Lane (Mia Farrow): all she did was moping around and/or crying and/or moaning and/or getting hysterical. Stephanie (Dianne Wiest) was her lovely, passive-aggressive best friend.
Peter (Sam Waterston) came through as morose, vain and self-centered.

Very much like real life, I'm afraid!

yeah, they are just like real people, huh? LOL. I loved the acting and the characters!

I have to agree with you. For me the only likable character was the neighbor guy who was in love with Elaine. However, when it was over I wanted to know more about what happened to her, if she moved to New York.

Didn't see what Peter saw in Stephanie.
Boyish looks and already married with kids.
