1987's Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nominees

were Olympia Dukakis in "Moonstruck," Norma Aleandro in "Gaby—a True Story," Anne Archer in "Fatal Attraction," Anne Ramsey in "Throw Momma From the Train" and Ann Sothern in "The Whales of August."

I couldn't say anything one way or the other about Norma Aleandro, but Elaine Stritch in September easily should've been included instead of Archer, Ramsey or Sothern.

Ann Archer was fine, but I'm surprised now that she was even Oscar-nominated for Fatal Attraction. Ramsey's role seemed more a novelty, and I didn't see Whales of August, but remember the consensus at the time being that it, too, was not an Oscar-caliber role or performance, but rather a "reward" to Sothern for her career.

It'd be tough to choose between Olympia Dukakis, who was wonderful in Moonstruck, and Elaine Stritch.

I agree. While I still think Dukakis was the best supporting actress that year, my close second choice would have been Stritch. Archer was actually very good, though, especially upon repeat viewings of Fatal Attraction. But Sothern and Ramsey did not deserve nominations. A major oversight leaving Stritch out.

My five nominees for 1987 would have been:

Olympia Dukakis, Moonstruck
Mia Farrow, Radio Days
Julie Kavner, Radio Days
Elaine Stritch, September
Dianne Wiest, Radio Days

I much preferred Farrow & Wiest in this film to Radio Days

if you don't like onions, you're not welcome!

For anyone who didn't see "Gaby," Norma Aleandro's performance was amazing and richly deserved a nomination. I agree with the original poster about the other three.

I agree with you, OP; Elaine Stritch deserved an Oscar nod for her fabulous performance in this film, what a wonderful actress.
